Falcons Fall to Emerson 6-5 in Extra Innings

Emerson scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Albertus Magnus softball team 6-5 in nine innings in the second game of the Sunday afternoon Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double-header.

With the score tied at two heading into the ninth inning, the Falcons (4-8, 0-4 GNAC) scored three runs in the frame led by an RBI double by Jamie Vesiglio (Stratford, Conn.).  Back-to-back ground outs from Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) and Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) plated two more giving the Falcons a 5-2 lead.

The Lions rallied in the bottom of the frame as they scored four runs on two hits and one Falcon error.  The Albertus miscue ended the game as the final Lion crossed home plate.

Maio and Vesliglio both recorded two hits in the contest, while sophomore Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) also chipped in with two.

Albertus scored first once again as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI from Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.). Maio led off the frame with a double before moving to third on a single up the middle by Mirto.  Figueroa followed with a fielder's choice RBI.

Emerson tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Lions scored on an Albertus throwing error.

The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the eighth as Mirto connected on an RBI single up the middle as Hribko scored on the play. The Lions tied the game once again as a wild pitch moved Brittany Rochford to third before she scored on another Falcon error to keep the game in extra innings.

After Albertus scored three runs in the top of the ninth, the Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the win. With the extra-inning victory, the Lions even their record to 7-7 and improve to 4-0 in GNAC play.

Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) earned the loss as she gave up two earned runs and walked five batters.

Albertus will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when the Falcons host Mount Ida College in a GNAC double-header beginning at 3:00 p.m.
