Falcons Earn First GNAC Victory with 4-1 Win over Mount Ida

The Albertus Magnus softball team downed Mount Ida 4-1 to earn its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the year on Wednesday afternoon in West Haven.  Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) went 2-for-3 for the Falcons with one RBI to lead the way.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 5-8 on the year and 1-4 in league play.

Albertus scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 4-0.  In the first, Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) led off the contest with a walk before stealing second to get into scoring position.  A sacrifice bunt by Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) moved Urciuoli to third before a Maio single up the middle plated the Falcons' first run of the game.

A ball through the legs of the Mount Ida third basemen allowed Maio to score later in the inning to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Isabel Lopez (West Haven, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch before an RBI single up the middle by freshman Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) scored Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) from third.

Mount Ida scored its lone run in the top of the seventh as an error by the Albertus outfield allowed Chaise Courborn to score from first base.

Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) allowed four hits and struck out six in the contest as she earned the win. Mount Ida's Allie Norris took the loss as she allowed eight hits, three earned runs and three walks.
