Gonzalez Lifts Falcons to 9-4 Victory over Bay Path

Led by a three-run home run from freshman Gilmary Gonzalez (New Britain, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus softball team downed Bay Path College 9-4 in non-conference action on Thursday night.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-9 on the year, while Bay Path falls to 8-10.

Gonzalez finished the night 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the Falcons.

After sophomore Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) walked to lead off the second inning, Gonzalez doubled off the centerfield fence to put two runners into scoring position. A wild pitch from Bay Path's Katrina Lury allowed Mirto to score from third before Gonzalez scored on a throwing error to first.

The Falcons' continued their attack as a fielder's choice and an infield single put two more runners on base before a bases clearing triple to right center by senior Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead. Figueroa also tallied an RBI in the opening frame which scored the Falcons' first run of the contest.

Bay Path scored its first run of the game in the top of the third as a Falcon outfielder misplayed a ball in right allowing the runner to score from first.

Albertus added three runs in the bottom of the third as Gonzalez registered a three-run home run over the left field wall, the first homer of her career.

The Wildcats added three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Albertus lead to four before the Falcons tallied their final run in the bottom of the frame.  In the inning, Gonzalez scored from third on a Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) single to left field.

Junior Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the year. Manning struck out one and allowed four runs and seven hits.

Figueroa added one hit and three RBI in the contest, while Vesciglio recorded one hit and one RBI.

Bay Path was led by Nicole Odgen with two hits. Katrina Lury took the loss for the Wildcats.

Albertus will travel to Boston on Saturday to take on Simmons College in league play. The game will take place at UMass Boston and is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
