Falcons Win in Extras; Edge Anna Maria 8-7

In the top of the eighth inning, the Albertus Magnus College softball team scored the go-ahead run to edge the Anna Maria College AMCats 8-7 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday afternoon. The nightcap was postponed due to darkness and rain.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-14 overall and 4-9 in GNAC play, while the AMCats drop to 2-20 (1-10 GNAC) on the season.

Albertus scored two runs in the second and one in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead before the AMCats tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third.

Anna Maria took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as an RBI double by Tabitha Ruggeri plated two runners to break the tie. The Falcons cut the lead to one in the fifth inning as senior Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) singled to score freshman Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.), who tripled to lead off the inning.

After another run gave Anna Maria a two-run advantage, Albertus tied the score at six in the top of the seventh inning.  With two outs, freshman Isabel Lopez (West Haven, Conn.) walked to get on base for the Falcons. Sophomore Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) followed with a two-run home run to tie the game.

Albertus scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth as Lopez, who was placed on second base, scored after a bunt by Pucilli and an overthrow by the AMCats defense.

Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.), Figueroa and Pucilli each had two hits, while both Figueroa and Maio added two RBI apiece.

Anna Maria was led by Ruggeri with two hits, including a double, and two RBI.

Nichole Lowe fell to 1-10 with the loss as she allowed four earned runs on nine hits, while striking out three batters.  Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) improved to 7-10 on the year as she pitched five innings in relief to pick up the win. She struck out six, walked six and did not allow a hit.

Albertus will play on Saturday, April 13 at Lasell College beginning at noon in its next GNAC doubleheader.
