Puccilli Homers in Game 1 to Lift Albertus to 8-3 Win over Rivier

The Albertus Magnus softball team cruised to two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victories on Sunday afternoon at Rivier University in Nashua, N.H.  The Falcons won game number one 8-3 and downed the Raiders in game number two 12-7.

With the two victories, the Falcons improved to 8-8 on the year and 2-4 in league play, while Rivier fell to 7-13 overall and 1-7 in league play.

In game one, the Falcons dominated out of the gate.

The Falcons plated four runs in the opening frame to take an early lead.  Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) led off the game with a single before scoring on a Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) RBI single.  Three more runs came across the plate for the Falcons thanks to a wild pitch and Rivier fielding errors.

Albertus added another run in the third to take a 5-0 lead as Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) tallied a sac fly to extend the Falcons' lead.  Another run came in the following inning for the Falcons as Britney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) also recorded a sac fly as Albertus went ahead 6-0.

Rivier scored two runs in the fifth inning led by an RBI double by Nicole Peacock and an RBI triple from Shaylyn Frei.

The Falcons matched Rivier with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth thanks to a solo home run by sophomore Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) and an RBI base hit by Urciuoli.

Brianna Longley (Milford, Conn.) earned the win for the Falcons as she went the distance in the contest, throwing a complete game, while allowing three runs on 11 hits.  She also struck out two batters.

Libby Sammon picked up the loss as she allowed eight runs on 13 hits in seven innings.

Carli Matrisian (Milford, Conn.) finished the game 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Puccilli finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.  Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) added two hits and two RBI as well.

Rivier's Nicole Peacock and Freitas had three hits apiece, while Freitas recorded her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
