Falcons Soar to 23-8 Win over Anna Maria

The Albertus Magnus softball team played to 23-8 marathon victory over Anna Maria College on Tuesday afternoon in New Haven.  The Falcons recorded 23 runs on 13 hits and 12 walks as they improve to 14-9 on the year and 8-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Albertus struck first as the Falcons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings.  Anna Maria (3-14, 1-8 GNAC) put together a six-run third inning then added a run in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. Albertus tied the game in the fifth inning before Anna Maria took a 9-8 edge in the bottom of the sixth.

The game changing inning came in the top of the seventh when the Falcons scored 16 runs.

Albertus used stellar performances from senior Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) and three other players with two hits to register the victory.  Urciuoli finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI, four runs scored, one walk and four stolen bases.

Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with four RBI, three runs, two walks and a triple, while Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) also tallied two hits, including two doubles, and three RBI.

The Falcons' Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) scored twice and went 2-for-4 as junior Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) registered her team-leading fourth home run of the season as she also scored three times and tallied four RBI.

Samantha Maselli (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) started the contest for the Falcons and went four innings but allowed seven runs on seven hits and six walked batters.  Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) came in to pitch three innings in relief and picked up the victory as she allowed just one run on one hit. She walked three and struck out two as she improved to 5-2 on the year from the hill.

Anna Maria was led by Kaitlyn Moran who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs. Nichole Lowe was handed the loss in today's contest as she falls to 3-6 on the year. Lowe allowed 20 runs on 13 hits in 6.2 innings of work. She also walked 12 batters.

Game two of the afternoon was never started due to darkness. A make-up date for game two has yet to be determined.
