Softball Weekly Preview: Coast Guard

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College softball team went 6-2 during their spring break trip to South Carolina last week to start the season. The six wins through eight games is the best start for Albertus Magnus under head coach Ed Emielita. During the trip, the Falcons recorded a pair of shutout mercy-rule victories against Principia and Southern Vermont. Albertus Magnus returns to the Constitution State riding a three-game winning streak after topping Bay Path, Southern Vermont and Keystone on St. Patrick's Day.

This Week: The Falcons return to the Northeast for a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival Coast Guard on Thursday in New London.

Series History: The Falcons are 2-10 all-time against the Bears dating back to the first-ever meeting between the teams in 1985. The two squads have not met since 1998.

Scouting Coast Guard: The Bears begin the week with a 5-7 record and are coming off a doubleheader split on the road versus Roger Williams. Before Coast Guard hosts Albertus, they will take on Trinity College on Tuesday. As a team, the Bears have a .311 batting average, 15 steals, seven home runs and 64 RBIs. The squad has a collective earned run average of 5.09. In the circle, senior Sarah Sorenson is 3-6 with a 4.83 ERA in over 53 innings of action. At the dish, Hayden Short is hitting over .500 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and a team-leading 21 hits. Emma Hvozdovich is htting .390 for the Bears and Emily Hogan leads the squad with 10 stolen bases and 17 runs scored.

Albertus Notes:
- Sophomore pitcher Megan Ferraro went 3-1 with 12 strikeouts and a 2.74 earned run average last week for the Falcons. She went the distance in all three of her wins, highlighted by scattering six hits in a shutout versus Principia. In her two other triumphs, she allowed just two earned runs combined in 14 innings of work.
- Sophomore middle infielder Brianna Whitfield hit .545 with a team-high 12 hits and five RBIs in seven games during the team's spring break trip last week. Whitfield recorded hits in six of the seven contests she appeared in, highlighted by registering four multi-hit games. In an 8-0 blanking of Principia, Whitfield went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. She ended the week with three straight games with two or more hits. Her strongest performance of the week came in an 8-5 win versus Keystone. She went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
- Freshman Kristen Cunning had a stellar first week of collegiate for the Falcons, going 2-0 with a 0.51 earned run average and nine strikeouts in the circle, while batting .286 with a double, two walks, one steal and four RBIs. In her debut against Sarah Lawrence, she went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. In the circle versus the Gryphons, she tossed a complete game and allowed just one unearned run. Later in the week she tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out seven batters in a win versus Southern Vermont.
- As a team, the Falcons have 14 steals, led by Megan Kelly with a team-best seven steals.
