Softball Upended in Tilt Against Iowa Wesleyan

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The Albertus Magnus College softball team lost in a competitive battle with Iowa Wesleyan, 6-1, on Thursday morning in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Janelle Franklin scored the lone run for the Falcons.

THE BASICS
FINAL: Iowa Wesleyan 6 | Albertus 1
RECORDS: Albertus (4-3) | Iowa Wesleyan (4-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game started slowly for both offenses. The Falcons went 3-up-3-down in the top of the frame, before the Tigers worked a pair of walks, but were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the frame. With two outs in the second inning, Ava Gladwin (Guilford, Conn.) lined a double to right field, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded when Kayla Resto (Shelton, Conn.) grounded out to second to end the threat.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers' Emma McDanel stroked an RBI-single to left field to score Ashley Pfadenhauer for the first run of the game. Falcons hurler Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) then induced a groundout and was the beneficiary of a Iowa Wesleyan base running miscue when Nadia Howell was caught trying to steal home.

The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bags for the Tigers, before Taylor Johnson walked in a run and Nadia Howell reached on an RBI-fielder's choice, extending the Tigers' lead to 3-0 going into the fourth.

Despite Kayla Gosselin (Milford, Conn.) reaching on an error, the Falcons were unable to score in the fourth inning. Karissa Kerrs (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) replaced Anderson in the circle in the bottom of the frame and loaded the bags with two outs for Taylor Johnson, who worked an RBI-walk to increase the Tiger lead to 4-0.

After putting the Falcons away three-up, three-down in the top of the fifth inning, Alex Eyman drove an RBI-double into center field, scoring Emma McDanel from third. Breanna Mettler then singled in Eyman from third, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of the Tigers.

The Falcons finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk and was immediately erased on a Janelle Franklin (Middletonw, Conn.) fielder's choice. Then Gosselin got on after an error to put runners on first and second with two outs for Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.), who ripped a single up the middle, scoring Franklin from second for the Falcons' lone run of the game.

A Peyton Davis (North Haven, Conn.) single in the seventh was nullified as Iowa Wesleyan retired the next three hitters to seal the Tigers' victory.
