Softball Takes Two from Mt. St. Vincent

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team extended its current home winning streak to four straight on Friday evening, defeating the Dolphins of the College of Mt. St. Vincent in non-conference action in both ends of a doubleheader at the Shea Softball Complex. 

Junior Peyton Davis (North Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with four hits on the day, while also scoring three runs and driving in three RBIs. Freshman Skylar Arent (New Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Erin Dighello (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched consecutive complete-game victories while allowing just one run in the doubleheader.       

With today's victories, head coach Ed Emilieta is now at 197 career wins at the helm of the Albertus Magnus College softball squad.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1
The Falcons opened the scoring in the bottom of the second after both pitchers combined for a scoreless first inning. Kayla Resto (Shelton, Conn. ) worked a one-out walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. An Arent double into the right-center field gap scored Resto from second to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Dolphins pitcher Katie Hutter retired the next two Falcons to end the second inning. 

The blue-and-white struck again two innings later, as Davis singled through the left side and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Resto double into the left-center gap plated Davis for the Falcons' second run of the day to give Albertus a 2-1 lead. 

After allowing her first run of the day in the fourth, Arent hurled a three-up, three-down fifth inning to keep the 2-1 advantage in favor of the Falcons. 

The Falcons exploded in the fifth inning for seven runs to put the game out of reach for the Dolphins. Five straight hits from the Falcons, capped by a two-RBI triple from Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) gave the blue-and-white a 6-1 lead before Molkenthin scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1. A Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) walk and a double from Davis put two on for Resto, who reached on an error that scored Stettinger from third for the Falcons' eighth run of the day. Arent stepped to the plate and quickly lifted a deep fly ball into right field that scored Davis from third and ended the game with a 9-1 mercy-rule victory for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2
The Falcons took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, plating one in the bottom of the first inning. Davis continued her stellar day, driving Janelle Franklin (Middletown, Conn.) home from third with a two-out single through the right side of the infield. 

Albertus hung two more runs on the board in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 advantage. Following a Madison LaBossiere (Griswold, Conn.) single and Fatima Rosales (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) walk to begin the inning, two consecutive errors by the Dolphins doomed them to give up more runs. First, a throwing error by the shortstop allowed Rosales to score before Rosales crossed home on a fielding error by the third baseman. 

After being shut out in the third inning, the Falcons exploded in the fourth to earn a five-inning victory in game two. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for AMC before Davis stepped to the plate and smacked a two-RBI double to right-center. A foul-out to first preceded a two-RBI single by Angelina Ramada (North Branford, Conn.) to put the Falcons ahead by a touchdown. LaBossiere capped the inning with an RBI triple to make it an 8-0 Albertus advantage. 

Dighello completed her outstanding performance in the circle by tossing a scoreless fifth to ice the victory. Dighello tallied eight strikeouts through 5.0 innings while allowing just four hits to earn her first shutout of the season.

UP NEXT
The Falcons return to the diamond on Saturday, March 26 with a home non-conference doubleheader against the Trailblazers of MCLA. Game times are set for 1 PM and 3 PM at the Shea Softball Field in New Haven, Conn.
