Savinelli Throws No-Hitter in Softball's Doubleheader Sweep of Elms

HOLYOKE, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team improved to 6-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) divisional play as the Falcons swept the Blazers of Elms College Thursday afternoon at Holyoke High School. The Falcons shut out the Blazers in the opener by a final score of 16-0 before securing the twinbill sweep with a 15-2 game-two victory. 

Albertus was led offensively by Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) and Breanna Saldivar (Middletown, Conn.) as the duo finished with a combined six hits. Smith went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and a team-high six RBI, while Saldivar finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI. 

Karissa Kerrs (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), Angelina Ramada (North Branford, Conn.), and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) also posted a multi-hit day for the Falcons.

Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) highlighted the day as the freshman hurler earned her third win after recording a complete game, no-hitter against the Blazers in game one. She also struck out two batters and walked one over 5.0 innings of work. 

Arent also served as a threat for the Falcons in the circle throwing her fourth complete game of the season and improving her overall record to 3-3. Over 5.0 innings, she allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Bats came alive for the Falcons starting in the top of the second when Kerrs allowed Smith to score from first behind a double to left center, giving the visitors the one-run advantage. 
  • Albertus kept the offensive momentum going into the top of the third as the blue-and-white scored four runs on four hits, including a two-run single from Smith, to extend their lead to 5-0. 
  • Albertus pushed its lead to double-digits, 10-0, following a five-run inning in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Smith and RBI single from Kerrs.
  • The Falcons put the game out of reach for the Blazers scoring an additional six runs in the top of the sixth, making the final score 16-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, Albertus capitalized on a wild pitch, two bases-loaded walks, a RBI single from Emma Signore (Guilford, Conn.), and a RBI single from Ramada.

AT THE PLATE

  • Saldivar, Ramada, and Kerrs finished with a team-high two hits.
  • Smith tallied a team-best three RBI behind a single and a sacrifice fly.
  • Kerrs added two RBI to her stat line along with her two hits.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Albertus jumped out to an early three-run lead over the Blazers in the top of the first. 
  • Back-to-back hit by pitches allowed Saldivar and Janelle Franklin (Middletown, Conn.) to cross home before a RBI single from Smith sent Arent home for the third and final run of the inning.
  • The Falcons' next at-bat saw the visitors score 10 runs on five hits, including a RBI double from Anna Leone (Shelton, Conn.), a two-run double from Smith, a RBI single from Saldivar, and a RBI single from Arent, and a Blazers error to take a commanding 13-0 lead.
  • Elms finally broke through in the bottom of the second as an error by the Falcons and a single from Nicole DeFeo allowed a pair of runs to advance home, trimming the deficit to 11, 13-2. 
  • Albertus' next two runs came in the top of the third as Savinelli reached home following a hit by pitch, and Signore scored off on a RBI single from Arent. 
  • The final two innings saw Albertus and Elms put zeros up on the scoreboard, despite the Blazers rallying for two hits in the fourth and one hit in the fifth.

UP NEXT

The softball team returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 15th, with a road doubleheader against the Cadets of Norwich University. Game times are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
