Franklin Collects 100th Career Hit in Softball's Doubleheader Sweep of Regis (Mass.)

WESTON, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team swept the Pride of Regis (Mass.) College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Falcons took game one by a final score of 8-3, before rallying for two runs in the top of the seventh to claim the nightcap by a final score of 3-2. 

Angelina Ramada (North Branford, Conn.) and Anna Leone (Shelton, Conn.) paced the Falcons at the dish as the duo tallied four hits apiece in the doubleheader.

In the top of the first in game one, Janelle Franklin (Middletown, Conn.) recorded her 100th career hit behind a single to left center. 

Inside the circle, Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Erin Dighello (Wallingford, Conn.) each hurled complete-game victories for the Falcons.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • After a scoreless first inning, Albertus came alive, scoring two runs on four hits, including an RBI triple from Karissa Kerrs (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), for the early advantage, 2-0. Ivy Geloso scored the Falcons' first run of the game on a caught-stealing opportunity, which Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) initiated, followed by Kerrs' triple.
  • Regis (Mass.) finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Diana Petrarca singled to right center, allowing Bianca Burke to cross home, 2-1, after she started the inning with a single to center field.
  • In the top of the sixth, Albertus pushed its advantage to two, 3-1, as a RBI triple from Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) scored Leone from second, who started with a one-out double to left center. 
  • In the home half of the inning, Regis (Mass.) rallied for two runs following a single to right field from Abby Erikson to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The Pride did not faze Albertus as the Falcons scored an impressive five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach, 8-3. 
  • Kerrs and Breanna Saldivar (Middletown, Conn.) kicked off the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a sacrifice bunt from Franklin to advance the runners to second and third. From there, a fielder's choice allowed Kerrs to cross home before a single up the middle from Peyton Davis (North Haven, Conn.) loaded the bases for Leone. The catcher then cleared the bases with a triple to right field, forcing Regis (Mass.) to go to its bullpen.
  • Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) kept things moving by doubling to left center to send Leone home for the fifth and final run of the inning. 
  • Solid defensive work and pitching from Dighello kept Regis (Mass.) off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to secure the game-one victory, 8-3.

AT THE PLATE

  • Leone led the Falcons with three RBI, while Geloso recorded two. 
  • Ramada and Kerrs each had one RBI.
  • Geloso has a team-high three hits during four at-bats. 
  • Leone, Fatima Rosales (East Elmhurst, N.Y.), and Kerrs each had two hits in the win.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Regis (Mass.) took the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 advantage into the second inning.
  • Albertus struck back in the second inning, scoring one run to cut the lead in half, 2-1. After two quick outs, Arent reached on a fielding error by the first baseman before a walk by Rosales put two on with two out for Kerrs, who ripped a single up the middle to score Arent. Regis' (Mass.) Petrarca hurled a pop-out to end the frame and send the Falcons into the second inning.
  • From there, Albertus and Regis (Mass.) locked in defensively as both were unable to put any runs on the scoreboard heading into the top of the seventh.
  • Arent was a key component for the Falcons as the hurler fanned five batters, while the defensive unit force Regis (Mass.) to leave five runners on base over the next four innings. 
  • With one out in the seventh, Franklin got the Falcons rolling with a single to shortstop, but despite a double to center field from Ramada, Franklin was out at home for the second out of the frame.
  • Davis ignited the Falcons' dugout with a single up the middle that allowed Ramada to slide into home safely to tie the game at 2-all.
  • Leone then gave the Falcons the lead following a RBI double to right-center field.
  • Despite a lead-off double to right center from Petrarca, Regis (Mass.) was unable to secure the win as Arent and the Falcons' defense retired the next three hitters to earn the divisional road victory.

The softball team returns to the diamond on Friday, April 28, with a GNAC non-divisional doubleheader against Rivier University. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Nashua, N.H.
