Softball Drops Back-to-Back Heartbreakers After Late Rallies by Augsburg and Occidental

LEESBURG, Fla. — Despite leading by three runs in back-to-back games, the Albertus Magnus College softball team is bested by late rallies from Augsburg University and Occidental College in consecutive 5-3 losses on Wednesday. The Auggies rallied back to knot it at three runs apiece to force extra innings and the eventual win, while four runs by Oxy in the sixth frame lifted the team to victory.

Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) accounted for two runs against Augsburg and Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) tallied a pair for the Falcons against Occidental.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alexis Enjem (Derby, Conn.) broke the scoreless drought in the second inning and brought home Edwards, who led off the frame with a single to centerfield and landed in scoring position two batters later thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Megan Cross (North Haven, Conn.).
  • Augsburg had a chance to score in the top of the third, but Olivia Funk's fielder's choice allowed time for Edwards to wrangle the ball before hurling it to catcher Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.) and throwing out Jayden Evenson at home plate.
  • Back-to-back errors by the Auggies put Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn. ) and Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn. ) on base, but only Carrano came back home in the third frame off a one-bagger by Edwards to put the Falcons up, 2-0.
  • Isabelle Smith doubled to right field and sent Edwards home for her second run on the night, after Edwards drilled a two-bagger to centerfield in the previous at bat.
  • Trailing 3-0 after five innings, Augsburg tied the game with a run in the sixth inning ignited by pinch runner Megan Gissler, who scored on a wild pitch.
  • In the seventh, Lola Pilon hit a one-out double, and pinch runner Morgan Paaske scored on a single by Zoie Johnson. Johnson then scored on an RBI single by Jaime Olson one batter later.
  • With runner Olivia Dynneson placed on second base in the eighth, Evenson hit a single to move her to third, and Torrie Rehder hit an RBI single to drive in Dynneson. Evenson then scored on an RBI groundout by Funk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Scheid led off the matchup with a double to left field and was sent home by Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn. ) two Falcons later. Molkenthin reached first on an error by the pitcher then advanced to second on the throw, and allowed Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) to advance to third on the throw after already securing second base. At the same time, Scheid took advantage of the overthrown pass for Albertus' first run of the game.
  • With Molkenthin at the plate, Edwards stole second and Scheid capitalized again on the miscommunication by stealing home in the top of the third inning to put the Falcons up, 2-0.
  • One batter later, Lucy Rodriguez (New Britain, Conn.) hit a single RBI to centerfield and brought Edwards home to pad Albertus' lead by one.
  • Alysha Wagner wiped the zero off the board for Occidental with a groundout to second base as Sophia Siu came home and cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third. Siu easily put herself in scoring position with a triple to centerfield to lead off the inning.
  • Pitching remained tight over the next two frames before four runs in the sixth inning shifted the lead to the Tigers. Ava Quezada and Evelyn Lorch connected for two RBIs each off a single to left field and a two-bagger to center with two outs on the board.
