Softball Ends Regular Season With Convincing Sweep Of Elms On Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team wrapped up its season in style in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader sweep of Elms on Sunday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex. The Falcons shut out the Blazers, 4-0 behind stellar pitching from Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) and Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) had six hits in the doubleheader, including three in game two in an 8-3 win.

Savinelli threw six innings allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out three in the game one win. Scheid went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI to help supply the offense.

In game two, Scheid went 3-for-5 with a run and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.), Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) and Julianna Petruzziello (West Haven, Conn.) each drove in two runs. Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.) earned the save in game two which tied the program's all-time record with the fifth of her career. Amanda Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) earned her first career win.

Prior to the game, Molkenthin, Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.), Lucy Rodriguez (New Britain, Conn.) and Alexis Enjem (Derby, Conn.) were all honored as part of Senior Day for the team.

The Falcons - seeded fourth in the South Division - will now host a one-game play-in against the No. 5 seed in the South, University of Saint Joseph in the GNAC Championship on Tuesday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings as the Blazers grounded into a double play in the first inning and each team had two hits but nothing to show for it in the second inning.
  • Albertus finally broke through in the bottom of the third inning as Scheid, Arent and Laforte all singled before Scheid scored on a fielder's choice by Molkenthin. However, that would be all Albertus would get as it left the bases loaded. However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons scored two more as Scheid drove in Enjem on a single. Enjem had walked to begin the inning. The Falcons loaded the bases after a walk to Arent and Laforte scored Gianna Carrano - who singled - on a sacrifice fly.
  • Savinelli and relief pitcher Ema Signore were able to keep the Elms' bats at bay, only allowing two more hits after the second inning.
  • Albertus tacked on one more run in the sixth inning as Rodriguez scored on an error from a pickoff attempt by the catcher.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams had opportunities to put multiple runs in the first inning, but both failed to score. The first three batters reached base for Elms but a lineout from Josie Cammarata led to Kyla Cook getting doubled off. After another walk to load the bases, Caity Flynn lined out to left field to end the threat.
  • In the bottom of the first, Scheid led off the inning with a triple. Laforte would walk two batters later and advanced to second on a ground out, but the Falcons were unable to get a run across.
  • Elms scored on an error in the second inning off the bat of Amanda Raymond, but the lead was short-lived as Albertus scored two in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Arent that scored Savinelli, who singled and Megan Cross, who reached on a fielder's choice.
  • The Falcons padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Scheid singled, followed by walks to Arent and Laforte to load the bases. Molkenthin then followed with a two-run single to make it a 4-1 game. Two batters later, Edwards reached on an error to score Laforte.
  • Kelsey Bennett got a run back for the Blazers in the top of the fifth, but Albertus was able to put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Laforte and Rodriguez each walked and Carrano singled up the middle to score Laforte. A walk to Signore loaded the bases and Petruzziello ripped a single to right to drive in two runs to effectively put the game away.
  • Elms added one more run in the seventh, but left the bases loaded.
