Falcons Begin 2012 with Win; Edge Saint Joe's-Brooklyn 77-70

Four Falcons registered double-figures in scoring to lead the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team to a 77-70 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Tuesday evening.

Bianca Brown (West Haven, Conn.) scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) tallied 24 points and seven boards to lead Albertus. Both Falcons combined for a showing of 19-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Dating back to the 2006 season, the Falcons are now 3-2 all-time against the Lady Bears as they improve their overall record to 7-2 this season. Saint Joseph's College moves to 1-8 on the year with the loss.

Senior Sarah Boudreau (Pascoag, R.I.) recorded her first double-double of the season as she finished the night with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

The Falcons opened the contest with a 9-0 run in the first 2:46 but the Lady Bears battled back to cut the Albertus lead to four halfway through the frame. Despite shooting 29.7-percent in the first half, Saint Joseph's only trailed by seven at the break. In the first half alone, the Lady Bears scored 20 of their 27 points in the paint.

Saint Joseph's opened the second half with a 9-0 run of its own to take their first lead of the game at 36-34 at the 17:30 mark of the half. After going down by three at 39-36 with 15:48 left in the contest, the Falcons went on their own 11-0 run to take back control of the game. The Falcons lead extended to as much as 13 in the second half as they led 64-51 on two Brown free throws.

Down the stretch, the Falcons hit 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, while freshman Taylor Jagoe connected on all four of her attempts.

Ashley McQuillan finished the game with 21 points for the Lady Bears as she hit 9-of-21 from the floor, including a 3-of-5 clip from behind the arc. All three of her 3-pointers came in the second half as she only had six first-half points.

Lindsay Karle (Wallingford, Conn.) finished the night with 11 points for the Falcons, while Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) pulled down eight rebounds.

Carrero scored in double figures for the sixth-straight game as it was her seventh game of the year with 10 or more points and fourth game of the season with 20 or more. For Karle, it was her fourth-consecutive game with double-digit points.

Albertus will head to Saint Joseph's College of Long Island on Thursday, Jan. 5 for a 5:00 p.m. match-up versus the Golden Eagles.
