Walker Nets Career-High 38 points in 84-77 win at JWU

Senior Kendrea Walker (New Haven, Conn.) scored a career-high 38 points as the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Johnson & Wales (R.I.) 84-77 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up in the Falcons' final game of the regular season.

Albertus improves to 19-6 on the year to mark the program's most wins since finishing 19-8 at the end of the 1995-96 season. The win also puts the Falcons in fifth place in the league standings as they will open GNAC Tournament play on Tuesday night at Rivier.

Walker shot 13-of-20 from the floor to lead the Falcons. She also hit 12 of her 16 attempts from the free-throw line. With 13 rebounds, she recorded her fifth-straight double-double as well.

Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) added eight points, five rebounds and six assists for the Falcons, while Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) pulled down 14 boards to go along with seven points. Sophomore Annie Sutila (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 13 points and five assists.

Albertus opened today's contest with a 6-0 run in the first two minutes of play before jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The Falcons then extended that advantage to 11-6. JWU bounced back and tied the game at the 13-minute mark of the first half before a 5-0 run by JWU in a span of 1:50.

The Falcons' largest lead of eight points came with 15:15 left in the opening frame as JWU's largest lead of the day came at the 4:51 mark of the first half when the Wildcats took an 11-point advantage. The Falcons battled back from behind to tie the game at 35 going into the break. Before the half, the Falcons outscored JWU 17-6 in the final five minutes.

Under five minutes to go in regulation, the Falcons took control of the contest and eventually jumped out to a seven-point lead with six seconds left.

Albertus will enter the GNAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will head up to Nashua, N.H. on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to take on fourth-seeded Rivier. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
