Muhlenberg Defeats Falcons 80-68

Despite28 points from senior Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team fell to Muhlenberg College 80-68 on Monday night in non-conference action in New Haven. Carrero tallied 28 points in 39 minutes of work, while shooting 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.

The Falcons fall to 2-6 on the year with tonight's loss, while the Mules' record improves to 5-4 overall.

With her 28 points, Carrero improves her career points tally to 1,471. With that tally, she surpassed Albertus Hall of Famer Karen Lobasz '95 and her career mark of 1,457.  Carrero is now 105 points away from tying the program's all-time scoring record.

Muhlenberg led 44-32 at half thanks to 11 points off the bench by Leanna Tallamy. The Mules shot just 39.5% in the frame but hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc to take the 12-point halftime lead.  Carrero had 15 points at the half as she shot just 3-of-11 from the field but hit eight of her nine free-throw attempts.

Albertus led 11-8 on a Carrero free throw at the 12:46 mark of the first half before a Muhlenberg 9-0 run gave the Mules a 17-11 lead in a span of two minutes.  Annie Sutila (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit a three pointer with 7:37 left in the half to give Albertus the lead once again but the Mules put together a 7-0 run to take a 26-21 advantage.

The Mules finished out the half with a 10-2 run to go into the break with the 12-point lead.

Carrero's free throw with 3:31 left in the opening frame moved her into third place on the program's all-time scoring list.

On the night, Muhlenberg shot 41.6% from the field, while the Falcons shot 38.3%.  Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) registered another double-double for the Falcons with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Chelsea Sherrod (Bridgeport, Conn.) added seven points and nine rebounds, including eight on the defensive end.

Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) added eight points and five assists, while Sutila finished with nine points.

The Mules recorded 21 of its 80 points off 14 Albertus miscues and on the night, Albertus was outrebounded 55-33.

Albertus will return to action on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 in the Salem State Holiday Tournament in Salem, Mass.
