Johnson and Wales (R.I.) hit 14 of its 25 three-point field goal attempts en route to an 81-64 victory over the Albertus Magnus women's basketball on Saturday afternoon in Providence. The Wildcats also opened up today's contest with a 17-4 run and never trailed in the contest.
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss drops the Falcons to 11-12 overall and 4-6 in GNAC play, while JWU improved to 14-9 on the year and 6-3 in league action.
Freshman Olivia Bolden (South Windsor, Conn.) led the Falcons with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting in 31 minutes of work. Bolden tallied 10 of those points in the opening frame on 50% shooting.
Albertus shot 42% in the contest and hit 19 of their 25 attempts from the charity stripe but were out-rebounded on the afternoon 45-28.
Johnson & Wales had five players register double figures led by Raquel Penderzani with 17 points as the Wildcats shot 43.7% from the floor. The Wildcats also tallied 22 points on 16 Albertus turnovers.
In the first half of the contest, JWU hit 7-of-13 from three-point land and finished the frame shooting 48.5%. Kristen Habbel led the Wildcats as she shot 4-of-4 from the floor, including a 3-of-3 clip from behind the arc. Habbel went into the break with a team-high 11 points.
At the halftime break, JWU led by 20 points at 44-24. Albertus came out in the second half and outscored the home team 40-37 but their second-half rally was halted with another stellar outing from behind the arc by the Wildcats. JWU hit 7-of-12 from three-point land in the second half en route to the victory.
Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) tallied a career-high 13 points for the Falcons, including a last second three-pointer just before intermission to keep the JWU lead at 20. Off the bench, the freshman shot 3-of-4 from the floor and was 2-of-2 from behind the arc. She was also 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Junior Chelsea Sherrod (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished the contest with a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with six points, while classmate Kelsey Pendagast (Shelton, Conn.) contributed 11 points for the Falcons.
Kiarra Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) added eight points for Albertus in the loss.
Albertus is now 10-9 all-time against JWU and has lost nine of the last 10 meetings versus the Wildcats.
The Falcons return to action on Monday when they head to non-conference opponent Coast Guard in New London. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
