NEW HAVEN, Conn.-The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team had another successful season in 2019-20, winning 18 games for the third consecutive year and posting their second-best conference mark in the last decade at 8-3. The women's basketball team recorded their second-highest points-per-game total in the previous decade with a 73.4 mark, accumulating a vast array of conference, regional, and national accolades.

Albertus opened the season with a pair of losses to Sage (69-46) and Farmingdale State (72-63). Katherin Raposo (Warwick, R.I.) and Beatriz Honorio (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the offense for the Falcons against Sage, with Raposo scoring 26 points and Honorio grabbing 12 rebounds. Against the Rams, Andreah Orr (Danbury, Conn.) recorded the Falcon's first double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

After the loss to Farmingdale, Albertus would go on a tear, winning eight straight games. The streak began with a 71-67 Falcon's victory over Springfield in their home opener. Senior guard Shyla Osmond (New Haven, Conn.) started her first game of the season and led all players with 27 points and four steals, while teammate Rah-Rah Thompson (Bridgeport, Conn.) would record her first double-double of the season behind 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Albertus traveled to Fitchburg State for their next contest, defeating the rival Falcons 87-71. All five of the Albertus starters logged at least 10 points, while Orr recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Osmond and freshman Kyah Nowlin (Stamford, Conn.) were the only two players to score at least 20 points, tallying 23 each.

Albertus would close out the first month of the season with a victory over Western Connecticut State, 71-63. Osmond dominated on the court, leading all players with 34 points, to go along with 11 rebounds and 10 assists, for her first career triple-double. Thompson tallied her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Falcons kicked off December with a 73-65 victory over Endicott College. Osmond (20pts. & 12rbs.) and Thompson (17pts. & 18rbs.) again led the Falcons, with each recording a double-double. After two stellar outings, Osmond earned her first Player of the Week accolade behind 54 points, 23 rebounds, 17 assists, nine steals, and one block.


After defeating Endicott, the Falcons continued their dominance with a victory over Westfield State, 99-90. Three different Falcons would record double-doubles in the contest, with Thompson leading the way with a whopping 31 rebounds to go along with 28 points. Orr was right behind her, grabbing 22 boards and draining 19 points for her third double-double of the season. Osmond continued to be in the thick of things, scoring 25 points, while also recording 10 rebounds and eight assists. For her dominating performance over the two-game stretch, Thompson was named the GNAC Player of the Week for the first week of December, scoring 45 points and grabbing 49 rebounds, while also tallying five assists, seven blocks, and a steal.

Albertus returned to the court a week later against Old Westbury, defeating the Panthers by a score of 66-55. Osmond (20pts., 10rbs.) and Orr (13pts., 15rbs.) led the Falcons with double-doubles. Four days later, Albertus defeated Mt. St. Vincent, 83-58. Osmond recorded her second triple-double of the season, with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists, while Thompson contributed 14 points and 17 rebounds. After a stellar week, the Falcons swept the GNAC Weekly Awards, with Osmond taking Player of the Week and Nowlin earning Rookie of the Week honors.

The Albertus women's basketball team ended their Fall semester of play with a 67-58 victory over Mitchell College. Thompson earned her second Player of the Week honor after tallying 18 points and 17 rebounds against the Mariners. Nowlin captured her second straight Rookie of the Week accolade after tallying eight points and five rebounds in the win.

Albertus' eight-game win streak came to a close with a 78-69 defeat to Gordon College. The Falcons rebounded the next day, however, dominating the Vikings of Salem State for an 81-54 victory. Osmond recorded her third triple-double of the season, with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Thompson picked up her third GNAC Player of the Week award the following Monday after averaging 21.5 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game against Gordon and Salem State.

Albertus then traveled to then-No. 4 Amherst College. Despite another double-double by Thompson, the Falcons were unable to break the Mammoth's winning streak, falling 88-51 on the road.

The Falcons then returned home to open conference play against Regis (Mass.) College. An 18-point outing by Osmond and Thompson's 10th double-double of the season propelled the Falcons past the Pride 72-65. Thompson's double-double earned her co-GNAC Player of the Week honors, her fourth GNAC honor of the year.

The Falcons finished January going 2-2 in conference play. A 25-point performance by Osmond wasn't enough to push the Falcons past the Rams of Suffolk University. However, the Falcons rebounded in their next game against Colby-Sawyer. Osmond led all players with 32 points, while Thompson collected her eleventh double-double of the season, with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Nowlin and Couture chipped in with 15 points and nine points, respectively.

Osmond's performance against Suffolk and Colby-Sawyer-57 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, three steals-warranted a third GNAC Player of the Week Award for the senior guard.

Albertus followed that up by splitting a pair of conference games with Lasell University and St. Joseph's Maine. Thompson and Osmond again led the Falcons to victory over Lasell, as the seniors combined for 39 points, 19 rebounds, 14 assists, and five steals, and one block. Three days later, the Falcons suffered a hard-fought loss to the Monks of Saint Joe's Maine.

The Falcons than opened February with three straight away victories over Norwich University (58-40), Dean College (77-54), and Rivier University (95-74). Osmond tallied 68 points, 17 rebounds, 18 steals, and 23 assists over the three games to collected her fourth GNAC Player of the Week award. Nowlin was also recognized for her solid play in the win streak, taking home her third Rookie of the Week honor with 59 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and 11 steals over the trio of games.

The Falcons then began a two-game homestand with a close 73-71 setback to Emmanuel College. The loss was Albertus' final setback of the regular season, as the Falcons went on to win their next three games.

Albertus built up some steam after the loss, winning three straight bouts over St. Joseph's (Conn.), Johnson & Wales University, and Anna Maria College to conclude the regular season. The Falcons began the run with a 90-45 victory over USJ in their 2019-20 home finale. Both Osmond and Thompson recorded solid outings on Senior Day, with the former logging 22 points, 10 assists, and six steals, while the latter posted 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The Falcons then handed Johnson & Wales an 80-63 defeat in road action behind a career night by Osmond. The senior guard poured in a career-best 48 points to go along with 10 rebounds for one of the best performances by a Division III player all season. Albertus' regular season came to a close four nights later with a 69-50 win over Anna Maria.

With an 8-3 GNAC record, the Falcons earned the No. 5 seed in the GNAC Tournament and faced off against the No. 4-seeded Rams of Suffolk University in the first round. The Falcons battled mightily until the very end, with Osmond posting her second 40-point performance of the season with 43 points, and Thompson recording another double-double behind 18 points and 14 rebounds. The game went into double overtime, with the home Rams squeaking out a 103-95 win thanks in large part to some foul trouble for the Falcons.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
After another outstanding year, the Falcons had two players awarded All-Conference accolades for the 2019-20 season. Both Osmond and Thompson were both awarded First Team honors after both seniors ended their illustrious career with record-setting campaigns. In addition to being named First Team All-GNAC, Osmond also garnered a D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Region Fourth Team nod.

Osmond's outstanding season featured the senior guard scoring a career-high 570 points, while also tallying 182 rebounds and a whopping 80 steals, on her way to five GNAC Player of the Week awards. She finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in six statistical categories, as she was second in triple-doubles (3), third in both points per game (23.8) and field goals made (219), fourth in assists per game (7.0), eighth in total points (570) and total assists (167). Osmond's 2019-20 season ranks first on the team's single-season leaderboard in assists per game (7.0) and second in points per game (23.8).

Thompson also represented herself well nationally, ranking first in defensive rebounds per game (10.0), second in total rebounds per game (15.2), third in total rebounds (364), and eighth in offensive rebounds per game (5.2). She also finished the season with the fourth-most double-doubles in the country with a whopping 20. To go along with her First Team All-GNAC recognition, Thompson also earned four GNAC Player of the Week awards.

As the only two seniors on the team, Osmond and Thompson's outstanding careers were both celebrated with the aforementioned win over USJ on Senior Day. The duo will go down as two of the most decorated Falcons in program history over their two-year careers on the team.

Another key figure for the Falcons this season was Orr, as the junior center set multiple career-highs. Throughout the season, Orr's energetic play led her to set career-highs in points scored with 215, assists with 21, and steals with 12. Orr finished the year ranked third in the conference in both field goal percentage (48.5%) and blocks (50).

Fellow junior Cassie Couture (Waterbury, Conn.) also had her best year-to-date in 2019-20. The Waterbury, Conn. native averaged new career highs in points (7.5), rebounds (2.3), and assists per game (0.8) in 23 starts. She also ranked third on the team with 29 made 3-pointers.

The Falcons were also helped by stand-out freshmen Beatriz Honorio and Kyah Nowlin. Nowlin's impressive rookie campaign was highlighted by an eye-popping 254 points scored (11.5ppg.), the third-highest total on the team. She scored double-digit points in 12 of her 22 appearances, including a season-high 30 points in a victory over Rivier. The three-time GNAC Rookie of the Week winner also snagged 79 rebounds and totaled 45 steals for the season.

Honorio had a fantastic rookie campaign that saw her score 81 points, while also hauling in 140 boards, the fourth most on the team. In addition, the rookie forward proved to be a defensive wall for opposing teams, as she tallied 20 steals and five blocks.

In addition to their on-court exploits, the Falcons also excelled in the classroom. Three of their players-Jah-Naisha Lee (Bridgeport, Conn.), Mariah Mandaluk (Shelton, Conn.), and Morgan Violette (North Branford, Conn.)-were named to the Dean's List for the Fall 2019 semester (STORY).
