Women's Lacrosse Falls to USJ (CT) in Regular Season Finale

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team concluded its regular season with an overall record of 2-15 following Wednesday night's 17-5 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road setback to intra-state foe the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.).

Senior Keegan Riccio (West Haven, Conn.) led the offensive attack with a five-point performance behind two goals and three assists. Sophomore Alexandra Barrett (Northford, Conn.) recorded her fifth hat trick of the season, while Amanda McGeehan (Milford, Conn.) scored two goals for the blue-and-white.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS 

  • USJ controlled the opening 15 minutes of play as the Blue Jays scored five unanswered goals, including four from Mackenzie Dinger and one from Ashley Rufo, to take the early lead over the blue-and-white.
  • Barrett kicked off the second quarter scoring the Falcons' first goal of the game off an assist from Riccio at the 13:10 mark, but the Blue Jays would resume offense control and hold a 12-goal advantage, 13-1, heading into the halftime break. 
  • The Falcons broke up the Blue Jays' offensive run with 9:45 left on the clock in the third quarter when Barrett found the back of the net for her second of the game and brought the score to 13-2.
  • Riccio also picked up her second assist of the game.
  • Exactly four minutes later, USJ's Rufo struck again, netting her second goal, but three minutes later, Barrett would find the back of the net for a third time on a man-up opportunity.
  • Barrett's tally at the 2:05 mark would close out the third quarter with the Falcons trailing 14-3.
  • USJ started the final 15 minutes of play with an unassisted goal from Dinger, but the Falcons caught fire as a pair of goals from Riccio and a goal from McGeehan trimmed the deficit to within single digits, 15-6. 
  • However, the final four minutes were controlled by the Blue Jays, who outscored Albertus 2-1, and went on to win the conference clash by a final score of 17-7.
  • McGeehan scored Albertus' final goal on a free position shot with 2:56 left on the clock.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Barrett also finished with a team-high four draw controls and eight ground balls.
  • Along with her two goals, McGeehan recorded a team-best three caused turnovers. 
  • Barrett posted her fifth hat trick of the spring.
  • McGeehan has recorded six multi-goal games this season.
  • Riccio posted her second game tallying five points.
