Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Eastern Connecticut in Season Opner

Mansfield, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw versus in-state foe Eastern Connecticut in the season opener on Tuesday evening at the Mansfield Turf Complex in non-conference action.

Both the Falcons and the host Warriors move to 0-0-1 on the season thanks to the strong play of their respective goalkeepers. Senior Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) made seven saves in 110 minutes of action for the visitors, while Rachel Skelton turned aside six shots as she also went the distance for the hosts.

In the second ten minutes of overtime, Albertus had a pair of scoring chances as junior midfielder Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) fired two shots on goal that were both stopped by Skelton.

Both the Falcons and the Warriors had two corner kicks during the final minutes of action.

Albertus opened the scoring late in the first half as sophomore midfielder Victoria Lavery (West Haven, Conn.) converted a cross from junior Alexis Mack (Meriden, Conn.) in the 32nd minute. The marker gave the Falcons their first lead of 2015 and it was also the first marker of Lavery's young career. In her 42 collegiate tilt, Mack recorded her second assist courtesy of the well-played cross.

Trailing by one late in the contest, Eastern evened the score at one in the 86th minute as Maggie Bodington scored on deflection by Case. Bodington's tally capped the scoring in both regulation and the contest as both squads failed to break through for the remainder of the game.

The Warriors held a 19-8 advantage in shots and both teams took six corners. Eastern committed 12 fouls to nine by Albertus Magnus.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday, September 5, with a road tilt versus regional foe Elms.
