Women's Soccer Weekly Preview: Suffolk (GNAC Tournament Semifinals)

Last Week: The third-seeded Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team blanked visiting No. 6 seed Emmanuel, 1-0, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals over the weekend. Senior midfielder Danielle Polvan netted the game-winning strike late in the opening half. Sophomore goalkeeper Lexie Fenn had a stellar game between the pipes for the Falcons, turning aside all four of the shots she faced to post her fourth shutout of the autumn. Albertus Magnus avenged a 2-0 setback in the Elm City to the Saints earlier this fall and advanced to the GNAC Semifinals for the first time since 2014 and the third time overall.

This Week: Albertus Magnus, the No. 3 seed, will host seventh-seeded Suffolk in the GNAC Semifinals on Wednesday. The Rams knocked off No. 2 seed Johnson & Wales, 2-1, on Sunday evening in the Ocen State. The Falcons are have won five straight versus Suffolk, outscoring the Rams, 23-2, during that stretch. The last Suffolk win against Albertus Magnus came in the 2011 season when the Rams blanked the Falcons in the regular season and knocked off AMC, 2-0 in the conference semifinals. AMC is 0-1 all-time in postseason play against the Rams with the only meeting coming in 2011. The Falcons have advanced out of the first round of the league tournament for the first time since 2014.

Earlier this Fall Against the Rams: Albertus Magnus raced past Suffolk, 7-0, two weeks ago in the Elm City. Five different Falcons scored in the game, highlighted by Polvan and junior Angelina Piccirillo scoring two goals apiece. In net, Fenn and senior Ryan Clark combined to make six saves and record the shutout for Albertus Magnus. On the opposite side, Kirsten Weiker turned aside four shots in a losing effort. Albertus Magnus held a commanding, 24-8, advantage in shots and took eight corners compared to four for the Rams.  

NOTES:
- The program earned its 100th career victory earlier this season against Nichols.  Head Coach Nick Wajnowski currently has 101 career wins with the Falcons. He is the winningest coach in program history and has also racked up 66 GNAC victories. 
- In their 10 wins this fall, the Falcons outscored the opposition, 42-4. In their seven losses, the team has not scored. At home, the squad is 6-2 in 2016.
- Albertus Magnus is making its 10th appearance in the GNAC Tournament, having posted a 3-7-2 mark. Two of the past three seasons, the team has seen its season come to an end in penalty kicks after playing to a draw. The win over Emmanuel on Sunday was the first in program history in the GNAC Tournament.
- Earlier this fall, senior midfielder Danielle Polvan netted four goals in a non-conference win at home versus Mitchell. Polvan had an impressive first half as she netted three goals. Her fourth tally landed her atop the program's all-time goals list with 32 for her career. She currently has 37 for her career after netting the game-winning strike against the Saints.
- Lexie Fenn has been solid in conference play this season, posting a quartet of shutouts. For the year, she has a .767 save percentage, a 1.37 goals-against average, 66 saves and four clean sheets (all in conference play).
