Austin Nets Two Goals as Falcons Defeat Elms in Season Opener

Chicopee, Mass. – Freshman Sophia Austin (East Hartford, Conn.) started off her collegiate career scoring two goals as the Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team defeated Elms College, 2-1, in its season opener on Friday evening in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game started off on a high note when Austin scored her first collegiate goal right away just 41 seconds into the first. Following a nice save from junior Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.), senior Alexya Alves (Naugatuck, Conn.) was able to control the rebound and find Austin in front of the net who put the ball past Elms' goalkeeper Rebecca Molin.

With less than three minutes remaining in the half, Shannon Denault found the back of the net for the Blazers after gathering a loose ball in the box. The Falcons' final attempt of the half came from senior Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) who was unable to put the ball past Molin leaving the score tied, 1-1, at the half.

Elms controlled the majority of the second half outshooting Albertus Magnus 11-1. With six seconds remaining on the clock, Austin struck again for the Falcons scoring the game winning goal. Elm's was called for a foul which set up the Falcons for a corner kick. Senior Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) set the ball on the line and Austin was able to connect off a header for her second goal of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) turned aside eight shots in the winning effort for the Falcons. Fenn and the Falcon backline played well and kept the potent Blazer attack at bay for a majority of the evenin.
  • Molin finished the game with two saves .
  • Elms outshot Albertus Magnus, 21-6, as well as held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Piccirillo and Kerrigan Loughman (Trumbull, Conn.)each added a shot for the Falcons.

UP NEXT

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Sunday, September 3 against Mount Holyoke. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Celentano Field in New Haven, Conn.
