Women’s Soccer Drops Conference Showdown with Johnson & Wales

New Haven, Conn. – Freshman Sophia Austin (East Hartford, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team scored the lone goal of the game for the hosts as the Falcons lost, 4-1, to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday evening at Celentano Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Austin opened the scoring for the Falcons just 35 seconds into the contest after finding the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. However, Cat Nolan would score the tying goal at the 29th minute mark after taking the shot from 10 yards out.

Deja Hursey would give the Wildcats the 2-1 edge less than three minutes into the second half as she drove it home after receiving the pass from Kyra Selner. The guests stretched their lead to two, 3-1, as Olivia Cairrao dribbled past a Falcon defender and found the back of the net for her eight goal of the season.

Albertus Magnus continued to fight back against the Wildcats' defense, but found themselves down, 4-1, at the 78th minute mark after Jaclyn Larsen scored off a pass from Hursey. The Falcons were unable to play catch-up and fell to the Wildcats at home, 4-1.

In net, junior Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) registered a total of 11 saves in the losing effort for Albertus Magnus. On the opposite end, Colleen Lynch turned aside four shots to earn her fifth triumph this year.

  • Johnson & Wales outshot the Falcons 27-6, including a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Wildcats also won the battle in corner kicks, 8-0.
  • Along with her goal, Austin recorded a team-high three shots, while Montano and junior Tiana Cass (Torrington, Conn.) tallied a shot a piece.
  • Senior Amanda Montano (North Haven, Conn.) recorded the assist on Austin's goal and extends her points total to three.
  • Johnson & Wales Olivia Cairrao paced the visitors' offense with a goal and a team-high six shots.
  • Deja Hursey finished the game for the Wildcats with a goal and an assist to lead the team to victory.
