Providence, R.I. - The Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against second-seeded Johnson & Wales University in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on Saturday evening, but lost to the Wildcats in a shoot out, 9-8.
Wth the tie, the Falcons conclude the 2017 season with an overall record of 5-8-2 and a 4-6-1 conference mark, while Johnson & Wales advances to the GNAC semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Johnson & Wales struck for the first goal of the game at the 65th minute as Olivia Cairrao fired a shot from 25 yards out to put the hosts up one, 1-0.
Albertus Magnus responded back by tying the game up at 1-1 at the 73rd minute on a header from senior Alexya Alves (Naugatuck, Conn.). Senior Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) passed the ball to Alves as she headed the ball home from three yards out.
Neither team was unable to find the back of the net and would send the game into overtime.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the game was forced into penalty kicks, where Johnson & Wales outscored the Falcons 9-8. It came down to the 11th penalty kick as Johnson & Wale's Kyra Selner put one past Falcon keeper Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) to advance the Wildcats to the semifinals.
INSIDE THE STATS
- Alves marker at the 73rd minute was her first goal of the season and eighth overall.
- Despite the tie, Fenn recorded an impressive evening recording a career-high 21 saves over 110 minutes. of play.
- The Wildcats outshot the visitors 45-2 and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
- Johnson & Wales Colleen Lynch earned her first tie of the year and made no saves in net.
- Cat Nolan led the hosts with a team-high 13 shot, seven on goal, while Deja Hursey posted 10 of the 45 shots taken.
- Alves recorded both of the Falcons' shot.
- Following tonight's match, Piccirillo finished her senior season with a career-high seven assists to move her total to 19.
