Women's Soccer Topped by Lasell in GNAC Semifinal

NEWTON, Mass. -  The sixth-seeded Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team saw its postseason run come to a close on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field with a 3-0 road setback against the second-seeded Lasers of Lasell University in the Semifinals of the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus came out of the gate looking to score as the Falcons forced a corner kick at 9:54 before Amanda McGeehan (Milford, Conn.) took a shot attempt that went wide in the 15th minute. 
  • Shortly after, the Lasers began to control the game offensively, with the hosts scoring their first goal of the game courtesy of Serena Speight at the 19:31 mark. 
  • Three minutes later, Lasell's Sarah Lynch found the back of the net, following a pass from Michelina D'Agostino, to put the hosts up 2-0 in the 23rd minute. 
  • Albertus countered the pair of goals with three straight shot attempts from Keegan Riccio (West Haven, Conn.), Ashley Shaw (Milford, Conn.), and Tyler Stocking (Middletown, Conn.), but two of the three shot attempts were stopped by the Lasers' backline.
  • AMC's offense continued to fight back as Riccio, and Ejalam Bravo (New Britain, Conn.) recorded back-to-back shot attempts in the final two minutes of the opening half. 
  • Still, the Falcons trailed the hosts 2-0 heading into halftime. 
  • Similar to the start of the first half, Albertus looked to score in the second by forcing a corner kick which led to a header attempt from Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) just four minutes in. 
  • Over the next 10 minutes of play,  Lasell rallied off three shot attempts compared to the Falcons' one from Riccio at the 60:12 mark. 
  • Lasell put the game out of reach for the Falcons scoring its third and final goal in the 75th minute to advance to the GNAC Championship, where they will face either No. 1 Johnson & Wales (RI) University or No. 4 Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday, Nov. 5.

  • Lasell won the battle in shot attempts with 15, compared to Albertus' eight.

  • Albertus finished with three fouls, while Lasell recorded six.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Today's game was the third all-time meeting between Albertus and Lasell in the GNAC Tournament.
  • Albertus is now 5-11-3 all-time in the postseason.
  • Riccio finished with a team-leading three shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Along with Riccio, at least five different players registered a shot attempt. 
  • Lasell was led offensively by Speight, who finished with seven shots, while Lynch and Bobbi O'Guin tallied two each.
