Women's Soccer Scores Late, But Fall Short In GNAC Match With Colby-Sawyer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team lost a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match to Colby-Sawyer, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Celentano Field.

Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Falcons in the second half, her third of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chargers set the tempo of the game early on, controlling possession for the better part of the first 20 minutes. They finally broke through in the 20th minute on a goal from Bridget O'Connell as she took a pass inside the box from Sophia Kuhlthau and scored her fifth goal of the season, making it a 1-0 game.

Amy Stevens (Lincoln, R.I.) made three saves in the first half to keep the Falcons down just one. Also keeping the Falcons in the game was Valeria Gonzales (Norwalk, Conn.) who chased down Hannah Marquis and used a slide tackle to dispossess her inside the box after Marquis got behind the defense.

The Chargers scored less than five minutes into the second half as Sam Bishop ripped a screaming shot from the top of the box to make it a 2-0 game.

Albertus found more quality opportunities in the second half and were able to get on the board as Ismaili put in a free kick in the 88th minute from 30 yards out over the Colby-Sawyer wall, making it a 2-1 game. The Falcons made one last desperate attempt in the closing seconds from midfield, but the shot was stopped by Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper, Lyndsey Valletta.

  • Colby-Sawyer was called for 13 fouls in the match to just three for Albertus. It was the least amount of fouls in a game this season for the Falcons.

  • The Chargers outshot the Falcons, 21-14 overall and 10-7 in shots on goal.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Colby-Sawyer now leads the Falcons, 3-2 in their all-time series.

  • Ismali moved to 11th all-time in program history with her 13th goal of her career.

  • Stevens is now seventh all-time in program history with 144 saves.
