Women’s Soccer Draws With Norwich, 1-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team drew with the Cadets of Norwich University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons came out of the gate with high energy, taking 12 shots in the first 20 minutes compared to the Cadets' one shot. Norwich goalkeeper Kayla Dawson saved four shots, while the other shots by Albertus were off target.

In the 30th minute, Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) capitalized off a goalkeeping error and intercepted a pass to score for the Falcons, 1-0.

Albertus and Norwich battled in the second half until Bella Roy was able to score for the Cadets in the 70th minute. Roy received a pass from Lindsey Duggan just outside of the penalty box, pushed the ball past her defender, and rocketed a shot into the upper left side of the goal to tie the game.

The Falcons attempted to find the winning goal in the remaining minutes, accumulating 10 shots in the process. Victoria Jainchill (Simsbury, Conn.) created a dangerous chance in the 83rd minute as she received a ball from Ismaili, drove down the line into the box, cut past her defender and pinged a left footed shot that the Cadets' goalkeeper was just able to push over the crossbar.

The score remained at a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Falcons held a great advantage in shots, 30-4. On target, Albertus took 14 shots compared to Norwich's four.

  • Albertus also held the edge in corners with 11. Norwich did not draw a single corner.

  • The game was nearly even in fouls with eight called on Albertus and seven called on Norwich. However, two yellow cards were issued to the Norwich players.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Ismaili scored her fifth goal of the season. The goal is also the 15th of her career.

  • Albertus and Norwich last played to a tie in 2019 in a 2-2 draw.
