Women’s Soccer Wins in Second Half Comeback, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team fought to a 2-1 comeback victory in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest against the Sharks of Simmons University on Tuesday afternoon.

After conceding a goal in the first half, the Falcons bounced back with two second half goals from Victoria Jainchill (Simsbury, Conn.) and Sophia Vescera (Prospect, Conn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sharks got on the scoreboard first in the 31st minute as Olivia Hewitt sent a through ball between the Falcon defenders. The ball reached the foot of Sydney Naumuth who drove inside to put one past the Albertus keeper Amy Stevens (Lincoln, R.I.).

The Falcons increased their energy in the second half, eventually evening the score in the 60th minute. Jainchill connected with Tyler Stocking (Middletown, Conn.) off a throw-in, who sent a pass back to Jainchill. She took a touch and proceeded to rocket a shot from outside of the penalty box to score. 

The match proceeded with high intensity for both teams, however Albertus was able to find the game winner in the 79th minute of play. Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) sent a through ball between the Simmons defenders to Vescera who was making a streaking run. She took one touch, set herself, then blasted a ball to the far post to take the 2-1 lead. The Falcons held on for the remaining eleven minutes to secure the victory.

  • The Falcons outshot the Sharks, 15-9. On target, Albertus had six shots compared to Simmons' five.

  • The Falcons had 11 fouls compared to the Sharks with 14.

  • Two yellow cards were shown during the game: one to Emma McEwan from Simmons and one to Albertus' Jainchill.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Albertus is now 5-1-1 in its last seven games. 

  • Jainchill notched her sixth goal of the season, also her ninth career goal.

  • Jainchill is tied for 10th in the GNAC in goals.

  • Vescera scored her second goal of the season and her career.
