The Albertus Magnus women's tennis team won their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match of the season as the Falcons cruised to a dominating 8-1 victory over Mount Ida College on Friday afternoon.
The win marks the Falcons' first GNAC victory since defeating Pine Manor 8-1 on September 22, 2010.
Due to the lack of daylight, the GNAC match was played in all eight-game pro sets.
Sandybell Anorga and Na'Tasha Mesidor led the Falcons with a come-from-behind win in No. 1 doubles as they were down 7-6 before winning three-straight sets to take a 9-7 victory.
Chantal Simmons also came out with an exciting win in a tie breaker after tying the score at eight apiece. With the win, the senior picked up her team-best third victory of the season in singles' play.
Gina D'Agostino earned a win in No. 3 singles as she defeated Julia Pagluca 8-5 in a close and hard fought match. Also in singles play, Malika Grant, Sogona Sacko and Na'Tasha Mesidor each earned dominating 8-1 wins against their Mount Ida opponents.
D'Agostino and Grant also picked up a win in No. 2 doubles as they defeated Pagluca and Leslie Campbell 8-1. Chantal Simmons and Sharinna Luna shutout their opponent in No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 victory. The doubles' win also gave Simmons her third win of the year as she is unbeaten in doubles' play with a 3-0 record.
