Women's Tennis Falls to Johnson & Wales in GNAC Opener

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus women's tennis team dropped its GNAC opener, 9-0, to Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon. With the setback, the Falcons move to 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, while the Wildcats won their third straight match to improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league tilts.

Johnson & Wales got off to a quick start, sweeping doubles action before taking all six singles contests in straight sets.

In doubles play, the Albertus Magnus duo of junior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) fell to junior Morgan Thompson and freshman Victoria Pizzulo, 8-2. The Wildcats took the other two doubles tilts by a score of 8-0.

Weaver battled at No. 2 in singles action for the Falcons, dropping a 6-2, 7-5, hard-fought match versus Emily Glass. At No. 1, Velazco fell to Thompson, 6-1, 6-1. The other Falcon to take a game in her match was sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) at No. 4. Wildman lost, 6-2, 6-3, to freshman Lauren Torre.

Albertus returns to action on Sunday, September 20 with a home non-conference contest versus Sarah Lawrence at 1:00 p.m.
