SUNY Cobleskill Edges Falcons 3-2 in Season Opener

The Albertus Magnus women's volleyball team fell to SUNY Cobleskill 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-10) in a five-set thriller to open the 2013 season.  Senior Lily Dy (Torrington, Conn.) dished out a match-high 31 assists, while Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) led the Falcons with 14 kills in Albertus' first match of the year in Springfield, Mass.

Freshman Caitlin Prete (Milford, Conn.) registered 10 kills in her Albertus debut as she added 15 digs, one block and two service aces.

After falling in the opening set 25-19, the Falcons recorded 12 kills in back-to-back sets, winning both.  In the second-set victory for the Falcons, Leanna Velez (Bridgeport, Conn.) led her team with strong serving as Albertus went on a 10-1 run to take a 19-13 lead after being down 12-9 in the frame.  Cobleskill battled back but a Manning kill secured the two-point victory.

In the third set, after the seventh tie of the frame, Albertus went on a 9-4 run to take a 22-17 lead before winning 25-19.

In the final set, Cobleskill jumped out to a 13-3 lead before winning the set.  With a 13-3 deficit, Albertus scored five-straight points to pull within four but an Albertus hitting error secured the match-point for the Fighting Tigers.

Sophomore libero Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) recorded five service aces and 14 digs, while Amber Cohens added six kills and three blocks. Freshman Taylor DePalma (East Haven, Conn.) added four kills and one block for the Falcons.

Katie Yang dished out 27 assists for the Fighting Tigers, while Amber Baker led all hitters with 15 kills.
