Women's Volleyball Drops Road Clash at CCNY

New York, N.Y. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference road match versus The City College of New York, 3-1, on Saturday evening inside Nat Holman Gymnasium. With the loss, the Falcons moved to 1-3 on the year, while the Beavers earned their first win of the fall to improve to 1-8 overall. CCNY scored a 25-22,

It was a long first set and the two teams battled back-and-forth for the lead. No team led by more than three points during the opening frame as the two squads were evenly matched. Trailing 23-20, Albertus scored back-to-back points capped by an ace from sophomore middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) to pull within one. CCNY would rally and take the final two points for an early 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons bounced back in the second set and tie the game at one. Albertus took the first two points of the stanza and built a 13-9 edge. A bad set by the Beavers gave the visitors a 17-13 lead and later with game point, a service error would give the Falcons a 25-19 win to knot the game.

The third set looked very similar to the first set as both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the game swapping point-for-point. After a CCNY attack error, Albertus held a one-point lead at 22-21. However, the hosts would respond with four of the next five points to take a 2-1 lead.

Again, the Falcons and Beavers battled from beginning to end in the fourth game. Albertus took an early 7-4 lead following a kill from freshman Angela Roldan (New Haven, Conn.). The Beaver would respond with a run of their own to build a 13-10 edge after a Falcon attack error. Albertus would score four score three of the next four points to pull within one before CCNY rallied again with six straight points to hold a 20-13 lead.

With their backs against the wall, Albertus battled back to tie the game at 24 following a pair of kills by freshman middle hitter Megan Gritz (Milford, Conn.). CCNY pulled away with back-to-back kills to take the game and the match.

Offensively, Gomez led the charge for the Falcons with 10 kills, while freshman outside hitter Gina Cintron (New Haven, Conn.) and junior right side Amber Cohens (West Haven, Conn.) added five kills apiece. Senior Ramona Onofrio (East Haven, Conn.) registered a game-high 26 assists for Albertus.

On the defensive end, Onofrio had a team-leading 15 digs and freshman libero Megan Warnke (Naugatuck, Conn.) added 14 of her own. Gritz had a solid match for the Falcons, recording 10 digs and two blocks.

As a team, the Falcons had 24 kills, 28 assists, 13 aces, 70 digs and four blocks.

Albertus returns to action on Monday, September 14 with a non-conference home match versus New Rochelle inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.
