Women's Volleyball Falls in Non-Conference Battle to Saint Joseph's (L.I.)

Patchogue, N.Y. - Despite a career-high 21 kills as well as double-double from freshman Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to Saint Joseph's (L.I.) on Tuesday evening at Danzi Stadium in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Albertus Magnus found themselves ahead by four, 24-20, following a service error by the Saint Joseph's, but a short spurt by the hosts secured the opening set win, 26-24.
 
Down by two, 15-13, Albertus Magnus rallied together an 8-4 run to take a six point lead, 23-17, before tying the match at one, 1-1, following the second set win, 25-19.
 
Albertus Magnus jumped out to a quick 20-8 lead until a service ace from Jessica Young shifted the momentum of the set and the host managed to take the lead 23-19. Saint Joseph's secured the third set, 25-23, on an attack error by the Falcons.
 
Similar to set three, Saint Joseph's battled back from double-digits to threaten the visitors' lead, but Albertus Magnus remained on top, 25-21, to send the match into a deciding set.
 
Despite an 8-6 edge in kills in the final frame, Albertus Magnus was unable to stop the hosts from taking the match, 17-15, after tying the fifth at 15-even.
 
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Luquis recorded her 14th double-double of the fall, 21 kills and 17 digs, to go along with an ace.
  • Senior Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) also recorded a double-double for the Falcons as the senior setter assisted 48 kills and recorded a career-high 27 digs.
  • Kaitlin Williams and Kriten Bohnenblusch paced the Eagles' offense with nine kills each.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game with 62 kills, 10 service aces, 96 digs and seven blocks.
  • Sophomore Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) posted her third double-double as well as posted a season-high 19 kills, two assists, 13 digs and two block assists.
  • Freshman Kimberly Keller (Bridgeport, Conn.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 kills.
 
UP NEXT
Albertus Magnus returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 28 as the Falcons wrap up the 2017 regular season with a home contest against Emmanuel (Mass.). First serve is set for 12 p.m. following the Falcons' senior day ceremony.
