Women's Volleyball Takes Five Set Thriller from Becker

Leicester, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team came out on the winning end of a thrilling five-set decision against Becker College on Thursday evening in non-conference play. The Falcons were led offensively by Diana Kalman (Naugatuck, Conn.), Maria Vazquez (Hamden, Conn.) and Jaiden Williams (Orange, Conn.), who each recorded a double-double against the Hawks.

TURNING POINT

Becker was leading 21-20 in the fourth set after a kill by Cullina, with a chance to close out. But Albertus Magnus finished on a 5-1 run to force the fifth. The Falcons exploded to a 6-0 lead in the final set. The Hawks attempted to rally, pulling ahead 12-11, but it was the visitors down the stretch, with Vazquez getting the final point off a kill. 

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Following tonight's win, the Falcons improve to 8-7 against the Hawks in the all-time series.
  • Albertus topped Becker in kills (51-31), assists (42-35) and points (66.0-59.0).
  • Williams collected her third double-double of the season behind a season-high 38 assists and 14 digs.
  • Kalman recorded her first collegiate double-double of the season, tallying a season-best 18 kills and 22 digs.
  • Vazquez finished the match with 11 kills and 18 digs to help her earn her first double-double of the year.
  • Freshman Irene Ronan (West Haven, Conn.) also served as an offensive threat for the visitors finishing with a season-high 11 kills.
  • Defensively, Jesselle Guzman (El Paso, Texas) paced all players with 23 digs, her seventh straight match with double-digit digs.
  • Becker won the advantage in service aces (15-12), digs (124-95) and blocks (6-5).
