Volleyball Suffers Three-Set Setback to Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team was bested on the road by the Mariners of Mitchell College in straight sets in non-conference action on Monday evening inside the Yarnall Athletic Center.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mitchell was too much for the Falcons to handle in set one as the hosts opened the frame with seven straight points before finding themselves ahead 23-6. 
  • Albertus then went on to record back-to-back points, but the Mariners tallied the final two points needed to secure set one, 25-9.
  • The Mariners started set two with a 12-3 run before a service error by the Mariners ignited a 6-1 run that brought the hosts to within four, 13-9. 
  • Following a timeout, the Mariners rallied as a team and closed out the frame on a 12-7 run to go up 2-0 in the non-conference match.
  • The final set saw Albertus and Mitchell battle through four ties until the Mariners gained control offensively and sealed the win with a 25-16 third-set victory. 
  • For the fourth straight match, Joismar Avilés (Hatillo, Puerto Rico) led the Falcons on the offensive front in kills with five.
  • Freshman Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) assisted 10 of the Falcons' 16 kills.  
  • Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) posted the Falcons' lone ace of the evening.

NOTEWORTHY

  • This is the second meeting this season between the Falcons and Mariners. 
  • Gordon recorded her fourth match with 10+ assists.
  • Avilés has led the Falcons in kills in four of the last five matches.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home tri-match against Anna Maria College (11 AM) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (3 PM) as part of Homecoming & Family Weekend.
