PURCHASE, N.Y.  - The Albertus Magnus Falcons women's volleyball team swept Purchase State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) on Thursday evening in a non-conference road match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in set one, thanks to three errors by Purchase. After the Panthers rallied to take an 8-6 lead, Albertus took a 15-10 lead, thanks to kills from Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) and Nathalie Wallace (Rocky Hill, Conn.) as well as an ace from Elizabeth Lynch (Stratford, Conn.). Albertus never let the Panthers get closer than two points the rest of the way, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Albertus jumped out to an 11-4 lead in set two, capped by a 4-0 run, including two aces by Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia). The Panthers tied the set up on three different occasions and eventually took a brief 21-20 lead. However, kills from Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.), Aviles and Pelaez shut the Panthers out for the final five points of the set to put the Falcons up 2-0 in the match.

The Falcons briefly trailed after the first point in set three, but never trailed the rest of the way, even after the Panthers tied three times. Purchase tied the game, 9-9 after a kill from Marcella Pena, but the Falcons scored four straight points, including two kills from Avils and one from Gordon to put them up, 13-9. Albertus led by as much as five after an ace from Amanda Zdru to make it 19-14. They were able to close out the match scoring the final two points, the last on an ace from Aviles.

NOTEWORTHY

• The Falcons won two of their first three matches of the season for the first time since 2018.

• The nine kills for Aviles was a career high.

• Albertus now leads Purchase, 6-1 in the all-time series, including wins in the last five matches. It is also the second straight sweep over the Panthers.
