Women's Volleyball Swept In Doubleheader Against Curry And Saint Joseph's (L.I.)

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  - The Albertus Falcons women's volleyball team dropped two 3-0 matches to Curry and St. Joseph (L.I.) on Saturday afternoon at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.

HIGHLIGHTS
In the first set, the Falcons took control early, taking a 6-3 lead, as Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) had four consecutive aces during the opening run. Curry came back, eventually taking a 10-9 lead on an ace by Avia Fraine. Albertus again would go up by two at 16-14 after a kill from Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.). The Colonels scored the next seven points, taking a 21-16 lead and holding off any potential rally by the Falcons.

Curry never trailed in set two, scoring the first three points. The Falcons got to within one on two different occasions at 8-7 and 9-8. However, an 8-0 run from Curry gave the Colonels a 17-8 cushion. Four errors from Curry allowed Albertus to get within five at 17-12. Curry once again went up by five at 23-18, but two consecutive errors by Curry made it a 23-20 game. The Colonels would take the final two points to take a 2-0 match lead.

Set three saw the Falcons take a 12-6 lead out of the gate as Elizabeth Lynch (Stratford, Conn.) and Nathalie Wallace (Rocky Hill, Conn.) each had two kills a piece. The Colonels rallied, taking a 14-13 lead, including five straight points. Albertus briefly tied it on a kill from Kanishjoary Marrero-Martinez (Schenectady, N.Y.), but again, Curry scored five straight, taking a 19-14 lead. Down 24-20, the Falcons scored three consecutive points on two errors and another kill from Lynch, but Curry ended the match on a kill from Morgan Kramer.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Curry now holds a 4-3 all-time series lead against the Falcons.

  • It was the second time this season Zdru had at least 20 blocks. Her four aces were a career-high.

  • The Falcons had a .429 attack percentage in the third set, a season-high.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Golden Eagles never trailed in set one, leading by as much as nine points on three different occasions. Twelve of the 17 points for the Falcons were on kills, including five from Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia).

The second set was full of runs as the Falcons took an 8-5 lead early on as Edwards and Wallace each had a kill. The Golden Eagles scored the next six points, taking an 11-8. Albertus responded scoring  five of the next six points to claim the lead, 13-12 as Lynch had two aces during the run. Again, St. Joseph's ran off six straight points, taking an 18-14 lead behind three aces from Madison Gremli. The Golden Eagles kept the lead for the remainder of the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

In set three, the Golden Eagles took control, scoring 13 straight points to begin the final frame. Albertus fought back, closing the gap to ten points at 21-11 after two errors by the Golden Eagles and a kill from Edwards. St. Joseph's went on to score the final four points to clinch the match.
