Women’s Volleyball Challenged in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Curry College women's volleyball was defeated in both games of a tri-match against Albertus Magnus and Salem State to open regular season play Saturday afternoon at the Messer Athletic Center.

GAME ONE: Albertus Magnus 3, Curry 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-23)

After dropping the first two sets, the Colonels battled back in set three, taking an early 5-2 lead off a three-kill run led by Abby Sousa (Seekonk, Mass.) and Meghan Abbott (Stoughton, Mass.).

The Colonels held a slight lead for the majority of the match, with a late kill by Kyah Earls (San Francisco, Calif.) giving them a 22-19 advantage. The Falcons managed to fight their way back into the set, eventually tying the score at 23-23 and closing out the set to secure the match.

Olivia DeForest (Plymouth, Mass.) led the Colonels with six kills with Abbott close behind at five. Emma St. Cyr (Dover, N.H.) dealt out a team-high 10 assists while Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) managed a game-high seven digs

GAME TWO: Salem 3, Curry 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17)

Earls and Abbott led the Colonels in kills with seven and six respectively while freshman Jasmyne Fillippini (Plymouth, Mass.) took on the role of assist maker with a team-high nine. St. Cyr was also effective offensively with eight assists. Earls also led the Colonels in with a game-high five digs.

Curry College (0-2) returns to action on Wednesday, September 4th, in their home opener against Fisher College beginning at 6 p.m.
