An eight-run third inning lifted the Albertus Magnus baseball team to a 16-5 win over Rivier in five and a half innings as the Falcons swept the GNAC double-header on Sunday afternoon. The game was called due to the inclement weather.

The Falcons scored 16 runs on 13 hits en route to their fourth victory of the season. With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-10 on the year and 2-2 in the GNAC standings. Rivier falls to 1-19 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Malcolm Mendez (New York, N.Y.) led the Falcons with a 2-for-4 performance with four runs scored, while Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.) went a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Rivier put two runners into scoring position with one out after a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Weaver in the bottom of the first inning. A double by John DiBenedetto cleared the bases to give the Raiders a 2-0 early lead.

Albertus took its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the opening frame as the Falcons scored three runs on one hit and two Rivier errors. After Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) scored the Falcons' first run of the game, John Almonte (New York, N.Y.) singled to center to score two more Falcons as Albertus took a one-run lead.

The Falcons took a 5-2 advantage in the second before posting an eight-run third inning to go up 13-2. Rivier added three runs in the top of the fifth before Albertus answered with two runs, making the score 16-5.

In the top of the sixth, Nick Russo (Stamford, Conn.) came out of the bullpen to replace Brian Levchuk (Branford, Conn.) on the mound. Russo forced a fly out to center before giving up a single to right. The Falcons closed out the game with a double play, their first of the day. After five and a half innings, the game was called due to the heavy rain.

Almonte added two hits and three RBI for the Falcons in the victory, while Sokolis added three runs scored, a hit and an RBI.

Levchuk earned the win, his first of the season, as he allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings of work. He also struck out six batters.

Rivier's Justin Chenevert took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. He gave up all 16 runs and 13 hits in five innings.

The Falcons will head to Trinity for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference ballgame in Hartford on Tuesday afternoon.
