Baseball Stumbles in Home Doubleheader against Anna Maria

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rochford Field. Albertus fell in game one by an 18-10 final score, before dropping game two by a 14-8 margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED - G1
The AMCATS took advantage of the game early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The first run of the game came off a throwing error from the Falcons. The next run came off an RBI double from catcher Noah Holland.

Albertus answered in the bottom half of the first, immediately tying the game at 2-2. The Falcons showed off their power, with Brandon Clark (Cheshire, Conn.) beginning things with a triple to right field. He was driven home on an RBI groundout from Matt Warren (Wolcott, Conn.). Justen Rodriguez (Waterbury, Conn.) followed with a booming homer to right.

Anna Maria re-took the lead in the top of the second, scoring five to go ahead 7-2. The visitors generated all of their runs on two singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.

After three straight scoreless half innings, Anna Maria added to its advantage with six runs in the top of the fourth. A two-run homer from Kosta Drosidis highlighted the high-scoring frame for the visitors, who now stood ahead by a score of 13-2.

The AMCATS added one insurance run in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to take a commanding 18-2 advantage.

The Falcons began to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting up an eight-spot to cut their deficit to eight, 18-10. Warren started the run by plating Clark from third with a triple. Rodriguez followed with an RBI single. Nhasean Murphy (Manchester, Conn.) and Joseph Matthews (Anaheim, Calif.) both earned RBIs with a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively.

Clark continued his stellar day in his second at-bat of the inning, slapping a bases-clearing double down the left-field line to plate Matthews, Murphy, and Zack Fenn (Oakville, Conn.). The final run of the frame came from Warren, who plated Clark to draw the score to 18-10 AMCATS.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, they went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a GNAC setback in game one.

• WP: Adam Twitchell (W, 1-0) | LP: Ricardo Torres (L, 0-4)
• Clark, Warren, and Rodriguez all finished with two hits each.
• Clark tallied a double, a triple, three runs scored, and three RBIs.
• Warren also posted three RBIs.
• Rodriguez recorded two runs and two RBIs, in addition to a homer.

HOW IT HAPPENED - G2
The AMCATS opened the game's scoring in the top of the second inning, putting six runs on the board to take an early lead. The visitors tallied their six runs on five hits and an error. A two-RBI double by Joseph Yannelli highlighted the frame.

Albertus got on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Rodriguez hit his second long ball of the day to score Clark. With the homer, the Falcons pulled within four runs, 6-2, heading into the fourth.

Anna Maria added to advantage in the top of the fifth, hanging five more runs on the Falcons to go ahead 11-2. RBI doubles by Adam Twitchell and Jarrod Marifiote highlighted the six-hit frame by the visitors.

Not to be outdone, Albertus scored five runs in the bottom half of the fifth to pull within four runs, 11-7. Following a Matthews' single, Clark smacked a two-run bomb to left field to start the run.

The Falcons took further advantage with two outs and the bases loaded. Both Caden Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) and Alex Kozlowski (Shelton, Conn.) grabbed RBIs with hit-by-pitches. Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) capped off the frame with a run scored on a wild pitch.

The AMCATS continued to add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, owning a 14-7 lead heading into the final frame.

Albertus put one more run on the board in the seventh on an RBI single by Matthews, but it proved not to be enough. The AMCATS held on in the seventh to secure the GNAC sweep with a 14-8 win in the nightcap.

• Matthews paced the Falcons with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, tallying one run and one RBI.
• Clark finished with two RBIs and two runs scored, hitting his second home run of the season.
• Clark is up to 98 hits in his illustrious career.
• Rodriguez also had a home run to go along with two runs scored and two RBIs.
