Baseball Splits Twinbill with Plattsburgh State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -  The Albertus Magnus College baseball team recorded a doubleheader split against non-conference foe Plattsburgh State University on Wednesday evening in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Falcons fell short in game one, 8-7, as the Cardinals won the battle when Nick Cergol homered allowing the game-winning run to score in the bottom of the seventh. Game two went to the Falcons, 2-1, as junior Christian Corliss (Burlington, Conn.) threw a complete game and limited the Cardinals to just one run on eight hits.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Albertus kicked off game one with the one-run advantage as a passed ball from Plattsburgh's Ryan Nista allowed Ron Losacano (Old Lyme, Conn.) to score from third after he kicked off the inning with an infield single.
  • The Cardinals retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the first, behind a Falcon error and a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Trailing by one, 2-1, Albertus rose to action in the top of the third tallying an impressive six runs off four consecutive doubles by Anthony Broadhurst (Stratford, Conn.), Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.), Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Losacano, bringing the tally to 7-1.
  • Plattsburgh narrowed the scoreline with an RBI by Cergol in the bottom of the third, 7-3.
  • The door opened for Plattsburgh in the bottom of the fifth when the Cardinals tallied the four runs needed to even the score at 7-all heading into the final inning.
  • Solid pitching from the Cardinals kept the Falcons at bay and going down 1-2-3.
  • The Cardinals ended the game with the lead-off batter homered for a walk-off home run.

AT THE PLATE

  • Albertus won the battle at the plate recording 10 hits, while Plattsburgh tallied eight.
  • Broadhurst and Abate led the team with two RBIs apiece.
  • Losacano, Broadhurst and Arent each recorded a team-high of two hits.
  • Losacano also added an RBI to his stat line.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Sean Jefferson (West Haven, Conn.) got things going for the Falcons in the bottom of the first as the left fielder doubled to right center to allow Losacano to score for the first run of the game.
  • The following two innings saw Albertus and Plattsburgh settle down defensively, with both teams being held scoreless until the top of the fourth.
  • Plattsburgh evened the game when the Cardinals first run of the game was scored when Mike Rasquin capitalized on a throwing error by the pitcher.
  • The next two innings saw Albertus and Plattsburgh settle down defensively, once again, and the score remained tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the seventh.  
  • The Cardinals defense fell apart in the last inning with two critical errors and a wild pitch that allowed the Falcons to claim the game-winning run.

  • Jefferson claimed the Falcons' lone RBI of the game.
  • Losacano, Jefferson, Broadhurst and Abate each notched one hit for the Falcons.

The Falcons return to the diamond Thursday, March 16th with a non-conference doubleheader against Framingham State University in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Game times are set for 4PM and 6PM.
