Baseball Splits Thursday Doubleheader with Framingham State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -  The Albertus Magnus College baseball team closed out its annual spring break trip to the Palmetto State with a non-conference twinbill split with the Rams of Framingham State University Thursday evening.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Framingham State opened game one of the doubleheader with the early 3-0 lead behind a pair of RBI from Robert Johnston and Cam Gilroy.
  • Albertus trimmed the deficit to one, 3-2, in the top of the second as Anthony Broadhurst (Stratford, Conn.) allowed the two runners on second and third to cross home plate when he hit a deep ball to center field, earning the RBI single. 
  • The Rams countered the Falcons' two runs in the bottom half of the inning with nine runs of their own to make it a 10-run ball game, 12-2. 
  • The Falcons continued to swing the bat, scoring another pair of runs in the top of the third courtesy of a two-out, RBI triple from Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.), bringing the score to 12-4.
  • Unfortunately, Albertus was unable to ignite a late rally and fell to the Rams by a final score of 34-6.
  • Albertus' final two runs of the game came on an RBI double from Aidan Kane (Middlebury, Conn.).

AT THE PLATE

  • Sean Jefferson (West Haven, Conn.) went 2-for-2 at the plate.
  • Broadhurst, Kane, and Smith tallied a team-high two RBIs.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Albertus kicked off the nightcap with the Rams scoring two runs on three hits, including a two-run, RBI double from S. Smith. 
  • Framingham State cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the top of the third, but the Falcons countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, increasing their lead to two, 3-1.
  • With one out, Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) found his pitch that allowed Jefferson and Broadhurst to score, while finding himself on second following the double to left center.
  • During Albertus' next at bat, King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) found themselves on second and third before a double to left center from Broadhurst allowed the duo to cross home, giving the Falcons a four-run advantage, 5-1. 
  • The Rams saw the deficit grow to eight, 9-1, as the Falcons tacked on an additional four runs in the bottom of the six, including two runs from Sullivan, to bring the score to 9-1. 
  • Albertus' defensive unit and impeccable pitching from lefty Justin Marks (Beacon Falls, Conn.) kept the Rams from allowing a late rally to occur.

AT THE PLATE

  • Sullivan went 3-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Broadhurst and S. Smith finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

UP NEXT

The baseball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 22nd with its home opener against Coast Guard Academy at Rochford Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4PM in Hamden, Conn.
