Baseball Drops Conference Twinbill to Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road doubleheader to the Bulldogs of Dean College Saturday afternoon at Longley Field.

Dean walked off with a 7-6 win in game one and scored the game-winning run in the eighth to hang on for a 4-3 win in game two.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Albertus jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first behind a groundout from Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) and a double to right field from Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.). 
  • The Falcons' lead was short-lived as the Dean countered with two runs in the bottom of the first behind a double from Joseph Bossinas and a single from Nick Amendolara to even the score at 2-all.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Dean struck again in the bottom of the third when Amendolara drove in Bossinas from first following a triple to right center, giving the hosts the one-run lead, 3-2. 
  • Albertus rallied in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits and a Bulldog error to regain the lead, 4-3.
  • Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.) started off the rally, reaching first on an error by the shortstop before finding himself on second following a stolen base. 
  • From there, King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.) forced a walk, and Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) loaded the bases for Losacano, who singled through the left side to allow Abate to score. 
  • Alex Kozlowski (Shelton, Conn.) kept the momentum going by driving in the Falcons' fourth run of the game, 4-3, on a single to left field before the Bulldogs' pitcher retired the next three batters, including two by strikeout.
  • The Falcons doubled their lead, 6-3, in the top of the sixth following a pair of bases-loaded walks from Abate and Rivera. 
  • Dean cut the deficit to within two, 6-4, as Jacob Paschetto hit a triple to the right-center gap to bring around Brian Dovidio from second. Shortly after, Paschetto then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5.
  • In the Bulldogs' final at-bat and with two outs, Tyler Giambra knocked in Amendolara to tie the game at 6-6. Seth Cruz then stepped in and delivered the game-winning hit that scored DeMarcus King.

  • Jefferson and S. Smith recorded a team-best two hits.
  • Six different Falcons tallied a RBI.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • After a scoreless first inning, Albertus scored a run in the second on a one-out sacrifice fly from Arent that allowed Nick Ramos (Mineola, N.Y.) to score. Shortly after, back-to-back hit by pitches loaded the bases, but an out at first stranded the runners.
  • In the top of the fourth, Sullivan drove in Losacano from second to put the Falcons on top by a 2-0 margin.
  • Following a fly out to center, Losacano started things off with a walk before advancing to second on a single from Kozlowski. Despite a fly out to right field, Sullivan recorded his second hit of the game that allowed Losacano to cross home. 
  • Albertus' lead grew to three, 3-0, in the top of the seventh when Abate drove in Sullivan, who reached base on a hit by pitch, with a single to left field.
  • The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to within one, 3-2, as the hosts plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Dean took its first lead of the nightcap when Gavin Goss scored the game-tying run on a double to right center. 
  • Goss would later score the go-ahead run on a passed ball, giving the hosts a one-run cushion, 4-3, at the end of eight.
  • Albertus' final attempt came in the top of the ninth when S. Smith reached on a fielder's choice, but a strikeout by Ramos stranded the tying run on base.
  • Freshman AJ Rooks (Coventry, Conn.) recorded a stellar game on the mound for the Falcons after allowing only one hit over six innings of work. He also tallied eight strikeouts and four walks.

  • Sullivan finished with a team-high three hits to go with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Losacano went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Along with Sullivan, Abate, and Arent tallied a RBI. 

UP NEXT
The baseball team returns to the diamond on Monday, April 10, with a home conference doubleheader against the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Rochford Field.
