Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Setback to Elms in Regular Season Finale

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team suffered a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader setback to the Blazers of Elms College in its regular-season finale on Friday evening. The Blazers took game one by a final score of 6-2 before securing the nightcap by a final score of 11-2. 

Ron Losacano (Old Lyme, Conn.) led the Falcons offensively, as the senior outfielder collected three hits in the doubleheader, including a triple, to go along with two runs scored.

Alex Kozlowski (Shelton, Conn.), Sean Jefferson (West Haven, Conn.), Anthony Broadhurst (Stratford, Conn.), and John Riccio (Shelton, Conn.) all recorded multiple hits in the doubleheader.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • The Falcons struck first as Losacano launched a lead-off triple down the right field line before Jefferson followed suit in the next at-bat with an RBI single into right-center field to give Albertus the early 1-0 advantage.
  • Elms' hurler Austin Roy settled down after retiring the next three hitters to minimize the damage. 
  • The Blazers tied the game in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on a hit and a walk to make it a 1-1 contest. 
  • Nick Ramos (Mineloa, N.Y.) got the lead right back for the Falcons in the top of the second inning, launching a solo home run over the left field fence to give Albertus the 2-1 advantage. 
  • John Riccio (Shelton, Conn.) and Kozlowski followed with a pair of singles each to put runners on the corners with one out, but Roy picked off a base runner and secured a strikeout to neutralize the threat. 
  • Elms retaliated in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back triples to tie the game at 2-all before a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly to center field scored another run for the Blazers and made it a 3-2 game heading into the top of the third inning. 
  • Elms' Aaron Young hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the third to extend the Blazers' lead to two, 4-2. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Riccio laced a two-out single but was left stranded when Roy struck out the final hitter to end the inning.
  • Falcons' reliever AJ Rooks (Coventry, Conn.) matched Roy with a scoreless fourth inning, and the teams transitioned into the fifth inning. 
  • Roy kept the Falcons off the board in the fifth before the Blazers tacked on an additional two runs to make it a 6-2 contest. 
  • Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) laced a one-out single in the sixth but was stranded when Roy retired the next two hitters. 
  • Rooks held the Balzers scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, and the team moved to the seventh and final inning. 
  • Despite a one-out, pinch-hit single from Broadhurst, the Falcons could not mount the comeback and fell to the Blazers by a final score of 6-2 in game one of the conference doubleheader.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Jefferson got things going in the second game, working a two-out walk before S. Smith laced a single through the 5-6 hole to put runners on first and second. 
  • Anthony Broadhurst followed up with a single down the left-field line, but Jefferson was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. 
  • The Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on two hits. 
  • Elm's hurler Henry Rondon shut the Falcons down in the top of the second inning, striking out the side to keep Albertus off the board. 
  • Elms put two on in the bottom of the second, but Falcon's starter Christian Corliss (Burlington, Conn.) induced a groundout and a strikeout to neutralize the threat. 
  • Losacano connected for a one-out single in the top of the third but was left stranded when Rondon put away the next two hitters. 
  • Corliss matched him with a scoreless third inning, and the teams moved to the fourth frame, the Blazers on top 2-0. 
  • S. Smith reached on a lead-off walk in the fourth but was erased on a double play before Rondon got the final hitter to ground out. 
  • Elms tacked on another run in the fourth to expand their lead to 3-0. 
  • With two outs in the fifth, Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) singled to center field and moved to second when Losacano reached on a Blazer's error. A wild pitch put runners on second and third before Kozlowski singled back up the middle to score Arent and trim the deficit to 3-1.  
  • The Blazers responded with a six-run frame in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 9-1 lead after five. 
  • The Falcons scored an additional run in the top of the seventh inning. Losacano drove a two-out single up the middle before Kozlowski reached on an error. Then, a Jefferson single plated Losacano before Elms hurler Kyle Sebastyanski ended the inning with a strikeout. 
  • Elms got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh, and the teams moved to the eighth inning, the Falcons trailing 11-2. 
  • The Falcons went down in order in the eighth, but Tristan Smith (Salem, Conn.) held the Blazers scoreless in the bottom of the frame to send the teams into the final inning. 
  • Albertus could not get the bats going in the ninth inning and fell to the Blazers by a final score of 11-2.
