NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team picked up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season during a doubleheader sweep of Norwich University on Thursday. The Falcons won game one, 9-4, followed by an 11-2 win in game two. Game two was a seven inning non-conference game.
The Falcons hit three home runs in game one as Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.), Eric Galarza (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Nick Ramos (Mineola, N.Y.) all went deep and Vance Ward (Norwalk, Conn.) went 3-for-5. Riley Corgan (New Milford, Conn.) pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Smith is now tied with Matt Warren for second all-time in program history with 18 home runs.
Jack Angelo (East Haven, Conn.) went the distance in game two, striking out two and allowing just one earned run on five hits over seven innings. Colin Telford (Branford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) drove in two runs. Galarza, Joseph Cortes (Bridgeport, Conn.) and King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.) also scored two runs in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams went scoreless for the first two innings as Nathan Rivera (Windsor, Conn.) of Albertus and Carson Rath of Norwich kept the offense off the board.
- Albertus broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with a solo homer from Ramos to lead off the inning.
- The Cadets broke through for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, with all the runs coming with two outs. After loading the bases with a walk, single and a hit by pitch, Jakob Hayes hit a two-run single to make it a 2-1 Norwich lead. After a pitching change, Isaac Maldonado hit a two-run double, making it a 4-1 game.
- The Falcons responded with their own two-out rally in the top of the fifth with six runs. Robert Anton (Woodbury, Conn.) and Ward hit back-to-back singles and Adriel Espada (Bridgeport, Conn.) followed with an RBI double to score Anton. Garabito then tied the game up with a two-run single. Smith followed with a walk and Galarza greeted relief pitcher Nathan Abbott with a three-run homer to take the 7-4 lead.
- Corgan came into the game in the bottom of the fourth and allowed just two hits in relief.
- Albertus added two more runs in the top of the seventh as Smith hit his fifth homer of the season - a two-run shot - to make it a 9-4 game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons scored in each of the first three innings to stake themselves to an early 7-0 lead.
- In the top of the first, Garabito hit an RBI single to score Espada, who doubled with one out. In the second, a failed pickoff attempt at first base allowed Telford to score from third, making it a 2-0 game.
- The big inning for the Falcons came in the top of the third as they scored five runs. Ward singled to lead off the inning. Two batters later Garabito singled and Galarza was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cortes then hit a ball to shortstop Baker Stewart, who threw the ball away, allowing two runs to score. Rivera followed with a walk and Telford hit an RBI single making it a 5-0 game. With the bases loaded, Arent followed with a two-run double to left field to score Rivera and Cortes for the 7-0 lead.
- Norwich scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Kyle Tanis and added one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Falcons put away any chance of a comeback as they scored four runs in the top of the seventh. Galarza singled, followed by a walk to Cortes and Rivera and Telford hit back-to-back RBI singles making it a 9-2 game. Albertus added two more on a bases loaded walk to Ward and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.).
