Field Hockey Tops Elms in Shootout for Second GNAC Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College field hockey team defeated Elms College, 2-1, in a thrilling shootout on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Celentano Field.

Ariana Martin (Hamden, Conn.) tallied a goal for the Falcons in the third quarter. As a team, AMC won the shootout 2-0, as Melina Tarzia (Stamford, Conn.) and Alexandra Barrett (Northford, Conn.) each found the back of the cage in the stanza.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Blazers took the first lead of the game, 1-0, in the 10th minute on a goal by Ellie Serra.
• Following Serra's goal, both defenses settled in, as the score stayed at 1-0 through the halftime break.
• Martin knotted the score at 1-1 at the 35:18 mark in the third quarter, corralling a saved shot in the arc and finishing by the opposing keeper.
• After Martin's tally, the defenses again took over the game, as there was not another goal scored for the duration of regulation and two overtime periods.
• With six quarters in the books, the contest had to be decided in a shootout.
• Albertus won the shootout, 2-0, with Tarzia and Barrett scoring the lone goals of the period.
