Men's Basketball Cruise Past Colby-Sawyer, 123-94

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team resumed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Tuesday evening inside "The Nest" with a dominating 123-94 home victory over Colby-Sawyer College.

Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) led the offensive charge with 20 points for the second straight game, while Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in with a season-high 18 points. Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) made his presence known in the paint by recording his third double-double of the season with a 14-point, 12-rebound performance. The junior center also served as a defensive threat, collecting eight of the Falcons' 10 blocks for a new career-high. 

Along with Washington, Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) netted 14 points, while both Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) and Tashawn Tokley (Merchantville, N.J.) rounded out the double-digit performances with 12 points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The team battled out to a 6-6 tie over the first few minutes before the Falcons pulled ahead with a 7-0 run to take the 13-6 lead. Washington led the Falcons with six points during the stretch. 

  • The Chargers put together an 11-7 run to come with three, 20-17, with 12:40 remaining in the first half. 
  • AMC responded with a 10-0 burst, behind six points from Dawkins and four from Crawford, to take the 30-17 lead.
  • The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, battling to a 16-point game, 40-24, at the 5:09 mark. 
  • Bonilla scored four points during the stretch, while Avery Hinnant (Naugatuck, Conn.), Tokley, and Dawkins each tallied two points. 
  • The squads continued to counter each made basket with another until the 2-minute mark of the first half, when a Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) three-pointer sparked a 6-4 Falcons run that closed out the half with the Falcons on top, 55-36.

  • AMC opened the second stanza with a 7-1 run, highlighted by a Bonilla three-pointer at the 19:06 mark. 
  • The Falcons kept up the pressure, continuing their dominance with a 7-0 run to take a 69-37 lead with 16:54 remaining in regulation. 
  • Following a Chargers' lay-up, Bonilla found paydirt for the Falcons from behind the arc, swishing a three-pointer to put the blue-and-white up 72-39. 
  • A Chargers three was countered immediately by a Daniels trey that extended the hosts' lead to 75-42. 

  • The Falcons continued to hit their shots, trading baskets with the Chargers to take a 90-56 lead midway into the second. 
  • From then on, the Falcons maintained their dominant play, scoring 33 points in the final 10 minutes to walk away with a 123-94 conference victory over Colby-Sawyer.

NOTEWORTHY

  • This is the 11th all-time meeting between Albertus and Colby-Sawyer.
  • Albertus is now 7-4 all-time against the Chargers. 
  • The Falcons' defensive unit set a new season-high in both rebounds with 36 and blocks with 10.
  • Albertus has scored 100+ points this season on two occasions, including tonight's 123+ point performance. 
  • Albertus tied its season-high in assists with 19 and rebounds with 54. 
  • 58 of the Falcons' points were scored in the paint. 
  • Washington posted his third double-double of the season and earned a career-high in blocks with eight.
