Men's Basketball Takes Down Anna Maria Behind Dawkins' Double-Double

PAXTON, Mass.- Behind a double-double from Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) and a season-high 14 points from Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team defeated the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by a score of 84-60 Saturday afternoon inside the Fuller Activities Center. 

Following a 19-point, 11-rebound performance, Dawkins registered his third double-double of the season, while teammate Slade tallied five rebounds, one assist, and four steals to go along with his 14 points. Freshman Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) and senior Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Anna Maria controlled the opening three minutes of play as the hosts went on a 10-2 scoring run behind six points from Gabe Armstead and four points from Hayden Braga.
  • Back-to-back baskets from Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) and Bonilla brought the Falcons to within three, 10-7, at the 15:49 mark, but a 6-2 run by the AMCATS pushed their lead to seven, 16-9. 
  • The Falcons continued to fight back as five straight free throws from Tashawn Tokley (Merchantville, N.J.), Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.), and Dawkins made it a two-point game, 18-16, with 12:20 remaining. 
  • The next two minutes saw the Falcons rally back from down five points, 21-16, to one point, 21-20, following a jumper from Slade. 
  • The AMCATS countered with a 5-2 push to take a 26-22 lead, but AMC's Slade went on a scoring spree netting the Falcons' next nine points, giving the visitors their first lead of the game, 31-28, at the 5:43 mark. 
  • Shortly after, the AMCATS' evened the game at 31-31 before the Falcons put together a 5-1 run on a jumper and a traditional three-point play from Daniels to go ahead 36-32.
  • For the remaining 3:08, Albertus and Anna Maria battled through two ties to go into the halftime break deadlocked at 39-all. 
  • The first 10 minutes of the second half were controlled by the Falcons, who outscored the hosts by a 23-9 margin to take a 62-48 lead with 10:23 left to play in regulation. 
  • The closest the AMCATS got to the Falcons was at the 7:40 mark, as Braga went 1-for-1 at the line, bringing the score to within 11, 67-56.
  • From there, Albertus increased its lead to 20 and never looked back, securing the road victory by a final score of 84-60.
