Men's Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller Against Conn. College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team pulled away from Connecticut College in overtime to secure a thrilling 73-70 road victory on Thursday evening in non-conference play in nearby New London, Conn. 

Albertus had three players - Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.), Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.), and Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) - finish in double-figures, while Dawkins and Washington recorded a pair of double-doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus and Conn. College battled through three ties over the first three minutes of play until back-to-back baskets from Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) and Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) gave the Falcons a four-point advantage, 10-6, heading into a Camel timeout with 15:17 on the clock.
  • Albertus began picking up steam as a pair of free throws from Washington ignited a 10-4 run that put the Falcons ahead by 10, 20-10, and forced Conn. College to call its second timeout of the game at the 10:10 mark. 
  • Out of the short break, the Camels put together a quick 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to six, 20-14, before a made jumper from Saikwon Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) got the Falcons back on track, 22-14.
  • The Camels continued to rally as the hosts went on a 6-2 run over the next few minutes to cut the deficit to six, 26-20. 
  • A three-pointer from Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) and a jumper from Dawkins extended the Falcons' lead back up to double-digits, 31-20, with 3:12 left in the first.
  • The teams traded baskets to finish out the half, with Washington and Dawkins combining to score four points for the blue-and-white and giving the Falcons a 35-26 lead at the halftime break.     
  • Conn. College started the second half with the hot hand as an 8-2 run brought the hosts to within three, 37-34, just two and a half minutes in. 
  • Daniels got the hosts on the board as the freshman point guard hit back-to-back three-pointers to boost the Falcons' advantage to seven, 43-36, with 16:50 left on the clock. 
  • Shortly after, Conn. College came storming back, tying the game, 47-47, at the 12:17 mark following an 11-4 run that forced Coach Oliver to call a timeout to regroup his Falcons.
  • The next two minutes of play saw the Falcons and Camels trade baskets until a pair of free throws from Cam Schainfeld gave the hosts its first lead since the first half, 51-50. 
  • The offensive tug of war continued as the teams battled for the lead heading into the final five minutes of play. 
  • Trailing by one, 58-57, Albertus' Crawford went on a run of his own, scoring five unanswered points to give the visitors the four-point edge, 62-58, with 4:19 left to play.
  • AMC countered Jarron Flynn's made basket at 4:08 with an 8-0 spurt, sparked by Washington, to go up three possessions, 68-60. 
  • The final two minutes saw Conn. College rally back with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 68-68 and force an overtime period. 
  • Albertus' first basket of overtime came at the 3:33 mark following a jump shot from Bonilla, giving the Falcons the early overtime lead, 70-68. 
  • A made free throw from Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) extended the blue-and-white advantage to three, 71-68, with 2:26 left in overtime before a Camels' lay-up cut the deficit to one, 71-70. 
  • The teams played tight defense until the 13-second mark when a Conn. College foul sent Bonilla to the charity stripe. The Falcons' guard quickly drained both free throws to push the AMC lead to 73-70. 
  • The Camels could not hit the game-tying three at the buzzer, and the game ended in a hard-fought 73-70 overtime win for the Falcons.

  • This is the 14th all-time meeting between the Falcons and Camels. 
  • The Falcons are now 5-9 all-time against the Camels following tonight's victory. 
  • AMC's last win against Connecticut College came at "The Nest" in a 76-69 battle during the 1994-95 season. 
  • With the Falcons' triumph tonight, head coach Mitch Oliver is one win shy of hitting the 300-win mark. 
  • Dawkins and Washington each tallied their fifth double-doubles of the season in tonight's contest.
