Falcons Swoop Past Blazers in GNAC Home Tilt

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) netted a team and season-high 22 points, while graduate student Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) registered his ninth double-double of the season to help guide the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team past Elms College by a final score of 88-74 Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action inside "The Nest".

Along with Daniels, senior Jacqual Gertrude (Jersey City, N.J.) also posted a season-high in points with 16 to go with two steals, an assist, a block, and a rebound. Dawkins' ninth double-double was earned by a 16-point, 12-rebound performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Following four ties over the first four minutes of play, the Blazers put together a 6-1 run to take the 15-10 lead with 14:04 on the clock. 
  • Gertrude got the Falcons back on track with a 9-2 run of his own on three straight three-pointers to give the host's the 19-17 advantage. 

  • A 6-3 Blazer run erased the Falcons' lead, and the visitors went up by one, 23-22, with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. 
  • The Falcons exploded after that for a 14-5 run, including four points from Dawkins and Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.), pushing their advantage to 36-28 heading into the halftime break. 

  • The teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of the second stanza, running the score to 48-37.

 

  • The Falcons used a 4-0 push on a made three-pointer from Gertrude and a free throw from Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) to extend their lead to 52-37 with 12:42 left to play.
  • Over the next two minutes, Elms and AMC exchanged three-pointers to run the score to 57-43. 
  • Following a slew of traded baskets, the Blazers put together a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to seven, 65-58, with just under six minutes remaining on the clock. 

  • AMC continued its offensive surge with a 10-4 run, including five points from Dawkins, to expand their advantage to 13, 75-62. 
  • The squads traded baskets for the remainder of the game, with the Falcons securing the 88-74 conference victory over the Blazers.
